Any advantage adding coir to straw substrate?
    #3537769 - 12/23/04 10:38 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I am planning on doing shroomgod's straw tek, but I am not sure if I have the right straw (all I could find was "Straw Weavers" Nativity Straw) although it is yellowish and all that. I also have a brick of coir, and I was thinking on throwing a little bit in the mix if it might bulk it up a little. I plan to case with straight coir (cus verm is illegal in chicago area, poop is out of season). Anybody try this? Will it hurt? Thanks for any tips.

There are those who bulk up their straw logs with verm.
I have never heard of using coir in a sub.

Nature designed staws outer waxy coating to repel moisture.
Verm is the ticket to bulk up & add something that will absorb moisture rapidly.

Coir should work just fine...no reason why it shouldnt and it absorbes better than verm anyway, Biggest shrooms i ever had were from 60/40 mix of Coir verm...had a EQ that was 85 gms wet once

Verm is not illegal in Chicago. Some hardware stores seem to be confused. We had this conversation about NY not long ago. Get to a garden supply store, or check out Lowes.

ya I dunno maybe they are confused, but I did go to 5 garden supply/plant nurseries and called at least 9 more on top of that, with the result of either "No we don't carry that", "It is illegal" or "I have no idea what vermiculite is". My faliure at Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, and Ace along with a slue of independent and speciality stores, have forced me to conclude that it is illegal or at least totally unavailable, if any body who lives around here has found different please drop me a line.
