Hello. I've got a couple of questions regarding drying / mouldy / rotting shrooms. I ordered 50 grams of fresh Hawaiian mushrooms (copelandia cyanenscens) from a reliable web site the other day that were delivered quickly and were of good quality upon arrival. They were in a sealed air tight container and apart from a little condensation, looked fine. I made a mental note to remove them from this container due to bad experiences in the past with mould, but alas was unable to do so for several days due to a hectic schedule. Upon investigation three or four days later they have dark black blotches on them. It does not appear to be mould (as in white fluffy tufts that I have seen in the past) but is possibly the mushrooms rotting? They don't look too edible at the moment, I was wondering if anyone could advise, and explain what process the shrooms are actually going through. Also, would drying the mushrooms resolve this issue? Would this make them safe to consume? Are they safe to consume anyway? What is the best method of drying without specialist equipment?
Due to the above problem I purchased an additional 20 grams of fresh Mexican shrooms today from a local shop. On initial inspection they looked fine, but when I got home I noticed again that they hard dark blotches on them (not as severe as the Hawaiian shrooms, some of which are entirely black now) and one appears to have a white fluffy substance at the bottom of the stalk, leading up inside. They have a strong odour, and are very damp. The store keeper mentioned that if I had been there ten minutes earlier, I could have had half a kilo that he had to get rid of. I asked him if this was due to mould problems but he didn't give me a direct answer, and I assumed that they may have dried to the extent that they were now considered illegal. I thought his ambiguous answer may be due to their dubious standing in terms of the law, but now am considering my original thoughts may have been correct.
So, can anyone suggest my best course of action? If the Mexican shrooms turn out to be unusable, where do I stand in terms of UK law if I take them back to the shop? (!!!) Will drying solve either of these problems? I know it's always better to be safe than sorry, and normally wouldn't think twice about throwing dodgy substances out, but it's my birthday in a few days and I would really like a good experience as I've been a good boy this year and haven't done any tripping for a long while to give my mind and body a rest, despite my total obsession with psychedelics. It has also been suggested that the shrooms could be salvaged by boiling and making into tea. I take it this doesn't effect the psilocybin (or equivalent) but is there any noticeable loss in quality? Would this make them safe to consume? Otherwise I'll have to settle for some acid of dubious origin or travel to the far dimensions of mescalito!!! Mushrooms would be best though, as my girlfriend wants to partake for the first time and I want to introduce her gently. Thanks for any potential advice, it would be really appreciated.
I wouldn't chance it if I were you. Some molds are toxic, including black mold, and no trip is worth a ride the the emergency room. Toss them and buy you some more. To store them for anything over a week, dry them. Easiest way I know of it simply cutting them in halves or quarters and placing them on top of your monitor for a day or so. BTW, you suck for being able to buy them at all.
