Good enough pictures?
    #3535348 - 12/23/04 12:16 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Please don't yell at me for posting this twice.

K, before I go and post pictures for ID'ing I wanna make sure I'm doing this right.
If I had taken a spore sample, gave something for reference to size and told you the enviroment found in... would these pictures be good enough for an ID? (I'm not gonna eat it, just wanted ta make sure I post correctly.) Edit- And if I searched through the photos already given and tried to I.D myself.

Those photos seem reasonably detailed. It would be more useful if you left the stem attached to the cap. Something you might try is cutting the mushroom in half vertically and showing us both the inside and outside halves. That way we can see from the inside whether the gills are attached or not, for example.

A quick glance at these photos suggests they are Cortinarius, although I can't see the surface of the stem well enough to be sure. Does it have some threads sort of like collapsed cobweb around where the color changes?

Happy mushrooming!

You mean on the trunk?
It's kind of shiny and has some vertical thread like detailing.
Maybe this is better?
For records sake I found these growing under my oak tree under oak leaves. They popped right outta the ground when I nudged them with the rake. (I was really just raking leaves, not hunting mushrooms, lol) They smell a bit like potatoes. These are a couple days old, (been in my jacket pocket for 2 days). The bottom is bulbous, inside trunk is kind of pithy.

I also found a squat little thing that's really round and has a deep purple center.

Well, when I figure out how to post my new picture I'll add it here. Hmmm

BTW these are scanned, my camera is dead.
I live in northern Florida. This is a fun hobby, mushrooms are pretty!

For the life of me I can not figure out how to add another photo to this thread. Is it disabled? I'll upload it to another server and post the link. I added a cig butt for size comparison. If there isnt a mushroom picture there, refresh the page.

Do you know how to make a spore print? Spore print color is very important for identifying mushrooms. If you don't know how, read the sticky thread at the top of the forum about rules - it has details.

They look like any of several very similar looking Cortinarius species. A spore print will help confirm this. You don't want to eat Cortinarius.

Happy mushrooming!
