Fill a 2 liter plastic bottle with dry sand. Put this in the middle of a clean 5 gallon bucket.Fill the bucket about 2/3 with water and freeze.Remove 2liter bottle{you might have to pour the sand out to do this}Place candle inside glass jar, light it and place inside the ice block.You could layer it with different food colors.A slow freeze makes the ice more clear.Depending on temp these will last days or weeks

I think jailbird Martha Stewart showed me that some years ago. I did a couple last year with pinecones and greens inside. Slow freeze - the ice was almost like glass! If you quick freeze it {0 F or colder} the airbubbles look like trails

How long did it takes for yours to freeze...
5 gallons eh? too bad i just traded my fridge in today and got a smaller one

3 days. About 8 inches took 2 days but because it expands, I top it off with 2 more inches of water to cover the bumps. BTW, do you get winter in "surf city"?

i used to make them, and they would last all winter you are in the catskills, it must get cold down there too. up here in january it gets to -10F constantly for a month. never gets warmer than -10F...

Tell me about it.I got so tired of fixing busted pipes every year that I redid my plumbing with CPVC and ran everything so it's accessable without getting in the crawlspace or ripping walls open.

not really. One week it will be in the 40's../ another week it will be almost 90... being at the beach makes the temp even more unstable. It does get cold at night here. I think it actually hit freezing point once. That's mad cold for socal
