Jar Availability?
    #3532061 - 12/22/04 04:09 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I've searched High and Low, near and far, over the mountains and through the woods. I cannot, for the life of me, find any jars.

Can someone please name a place where I can acquire jars? Preferably without having to order them online. Like a national store would be nice..

Thank you in advance.

I thought about that, but the problem with jam jars (in my experience anyway) is that they taper inwards at the top near the lid.

Just get regular cups coffee cups, drinking glasses, anything that can be pressure cooked and put a couple of layers of tin foil around them and wrap PC-able wire around them. When ready to inoculate, I use Lysol Anti-bacterial wet wipes to sterilize the tinfoil and needle, and then I lay it over the tin foil. I re-disinfect the needle with 99.9% germ-free hand sanitizer, and then inoculate the jar in 4 places through the wet wipes. ZipLock and Glad mini-tupperware, if it has a triangle with "PP" inscribed in it can be pressure cooked, but the lid comes loose after 4-6 uses. It really doesn't matter if the glass tappers or not, you can simply dig it out w/ a knife or spoon and make a casing with it. It will take the mycelium a day or so to recover, but it will not be fazed from then on.

Finding a container for PF cakes (Or other substrates if you're experienced) should not be hard. You could use any quart container, and just make a casing of it.

Find drinking glass that will work and use layers of foil as a top.

open the yellow pages and start calling all the hardware stores untill you find one that carries them. it took me about 15 phone calls to find them.

Thanks for the help guys.

Let me just say that I already checked the following:

Walmart
Kmart
Target
Walgreens

Nothing in any of those.

Thanks for the other suggestions, though

You can't trust what Walmart tells you on the phone, and their online search is pitiful. I just tried "Ball Jars" and it gave me a bunch of Irish music. Best go see for yourself.

The jars are usually in the gardening section at walmart..they ARE there. Ace hardware also carries them as do some larger grocery stores. Ask a few people at walmart where the canning jars are. The older people have usually been working there a while so ask them.. Ace Hardware has the better selection of jars though..any hardware store will probably have them though.

I bought some just tonight. Kroger's grocery store, walmart had full pint jars in the kitchen section near the pressure cookrs and pots & pans. no 1/2 pints though, pissed me off...had to go across the street to the kroger. They were next to the garbage bags there, don't ask why. Remember that 8oz = 1/2 pint...I was fuckin stoned and had to go find a measuring cup to make sure I was right about that...

If you're doing grain substrates you don't need wide mouth jars. In that case why don't you just use any other jars? Like pasta sauce jars for instance. Just have pasta for lunch and dinner for a week and you'll have 7 empty jars...Haha.

Go look =) ~D

I couldn't find any at Walmart yesterday either so I figured I'd give Publixa try since it was close, turns out they sell Bell jars in dozen packs for like $6
