Could it be the box???? **PICS**
    #3531600 - 12/22/04 02:02 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

The other day I posted a question of why are my casings only producing mini shrooms, this thread can be found at...
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3527437/an/0/page/0/gonew/1#UNREAD

now the idea has entered my mind that it may be my box. The box is approx 1.5 feet tall and 2x2 feet wide. Lighting is 3 14 watt compact flouresents A fan is located in the top corner of the box as shown in the pictures. could this fan be the cause of the problems or could it be the box in general.

The fan

Carpophore size/weight/potency varies depending on:

nutritional value of the substrate
availible moisture
amount of fresh air exchange

I should also say that my fish tank setup without a fan produces nice and big shrooms off similar casings, this is where i got my theory

Should put that casing on the tin foil so its not in direct contact with the perlite.

With a substrate depth of what looks to be less than an inch deep, I wouldnt expect much bigger shrooms than that.

what was the media?

PF-Tek jars with brown rye flour replacing BRF cased with 60/40 verm/coir, deteils in the link posted, the thing is in the fishtank one of my casings had only a 1/2 inch substrate layer with a 1/4 inch casin layer and yeilded 5 inch tall shrooms, this only seems to happen in this box, i think the fan is drying ou my casing layer. also the only reason that the casing is sitting directly on the peralite is because i birthed it so people could see the depth of the layers

Quote:

Use a smaller surface area and a deeper substrate depth. Aim for at least 2 inches. I recommend a 3.5" minimum.

The fan is a good thing. It is moving the air around, so your mushies aren't hurt from too much C02.

The box is very similar to many other successfully used fruiting chambers.

Lets put it this way. If other casing's could look at your casing and say one thing, they would probably say "eat and get off the crack". It's just way to damn thin

true dat.

my first casing only put of stubby mushrooms because i made the same mistake you did... too thin of a substrate layer. after another casing with a larger substrate depth, you'll really see the difference.

like dmc said, at least 2 inches, period.

If those are genetically dwarfed mushrooms, please send them here! I'll take one spore syringe! (I like the dwarfed ones.)

nope same casing procedure, same jars, same spores, in fish tank, grew a massive shroom with a stem girth of 1 inch in diameter and a stem length (without cap) of 8 inches

What is your relative humidity? I have been reading your thread and waiting to see if anybody concurs with my thoughts. I personaly think that your RH is too low. Low RH still produces shrooms, but fewer and smaller ones. From your pics all you are using to add moisture to your area is perlite. It appears that the top of your container is not tight, allowing lots of air transfer. You also have a fan (which by itself is okay) helping to dry out your box.

Just my thought and observations trying to help... any other ideas?

I think if you are producing healthy looking bigger shrooms in the past, your humidity is not an issue. It looks like you have a decent humidity tent up, plus that perlite should be rocking something fierce. Check your humidity...if it's too low, that could be your problem. Even if your humidity is low, there is no reason for casings to be less than an inch thick. I think that if you find your humidity too low and raise it, you will still suffer from strange yields on that casing.
