FOOD DEHYDRATOR???
#3531363 - 12/22/04 11:12 AM (19 years, 3 months ago) |

Week ago or so I got a food dehydrator and dried my 1st batch. So after 10 hours shrooms were dry.Broke like a cracker.Put into plastic bag and then into freezer. Also had a desiccant package in there.About a week latter checked and the shrooms are starting to rehydrat
Why want they stay dry???

hang on kapt im confused. if something is in the freezer and all the water particles are frozen then how is it possible to have them absorb into anything, they are frozen. but still at the same time what would be an advantage of keeping something that contains NO water in the freezer? im just really confused right now. now lets say im thinking all crazy right now, and i have to be cause this is not what you are experiencing. the mushies are simply reabsorbing the water in the freezer. how about trying to keep them in a cool dark place with some desiccant in them? that would help reduce the chances of absorbing water. can anyone please clear up my thinking on the whole freezer thing, thanks.

Your plastic bag & seal is the problem.
Baggy type plastic is not air tight. Over time it will allow gas exchange.
Bag must be like food storage vacuum seal, or autoclave material (polypropylene).
Seal must be TIGHT, or heat seal, like impulse sealer.

to be honest i would steer clear of the freezer altogether, but that's just me. but yeah double bagged i would think to be better but still not fool proof. just try out what i said about the dark cool place with some desiccant, and to add to that i would throw it all in a airtight tupperware container.

You can freeze fully dried mushrooms just fine..its the best way to preserve them...however like agar said, regular plastic bags will slowly absorb moisture...airtight jars (you know them jars you bought for substrate and put holes in...grab a dozen of those for shroom and bud storage..their great) work best but bags agar suggested will work if probably done as well.

Also, any moisture in the air that you trap inside the bag will seep into the mushrooms. So you want as little air as possible in there. Vacuum-sealed would be the best, I think. Enclose it in 2 bags - or, better still, a bag and a jar; then put a bag of desiccant in the 2nd bag or the jar. And the mushrooms should be dried to the point where if you give them a hard look, they turn to dust.

I use a diamond tipped drill bit and put all the holes in the bottoms of my jars..just to be different. Holes in the jars as opposed to lids increases yeilds by exactly 84% everytime.

Twas all a JOKE . I razzed Scat, he razzed me back. Besides, I would go to a glass shop, have jars cut in half, then take them to a glass blower & have ones made from the open halves, so I could put a lid on both ends. ( JOKE )

Best way I've found to store in my experience is to take a pint jar, gently pack it with mushrooms, fill any remaining space with cotton replace the area with volume instead of air containing oxygen, screw on your lid, wrap the lid with saran wrap, and then tape the saran wrap..put in a dark place. Just what I do, and never had any problems with moisture/rot/potency ect. ~D

hey majestic. you should reconsider the cotton. coton can wick up water then spread it to your mushies resulting in bad mushies. i would simply replace it desiccant
