hey all, just two really simple questions..
1. How do i dunk a casing?
2. Do i cold shock my casing before the first flush by covering it with foil and leaving it in the fridge?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Casing = a covering layer of soil with a specific microflora for Fruiting. Casing materials include Peat, coco Coir and Vermiculite with addition of Limestone and crushed oyster shells. 1. Please define what YOU mean by "casing" & why you would want to "dunk" one. 2. Cold shock is intended to INDUCE pinning, if a cased substate will not do so naturaly.
I've never dunked a casing, so I can't help ya there. As to wether or not to cold shock is up to you. Sometimes you might not have to do this, and then there are times were it's helpful to throw your casing in a fridg. I've always wrapped the casing in foil, and put them back in the incubator near a window. This has never failed for me.....yet;)
I have dunked casings but never before the first flush...after the first flush the casing holds together and you can pour fresh water/h202 over it for 6-24 hours to attempt to rehydrate it.
I have found that the casings dont suck up water to well unless its got verm in there..I'm sure PF substrate would like being rehydrated. However I think what good it does me is washing off all the spores and whatnot on the top layer of casing...almost like scratching but without actually scratching..just pouring water all over it disturbs the whole casing surface and cleans it up. Then I add casing mix where needed. So nowadays I only dunk if I think the casing layer needs to be "washed off" a bit..and then its only for a few hours while I spread out whatever I pulled off the casing onto trays for drying..then patch and back into the chamber.
You can cold shock the casing without dunking it..cover with tin foil well and in the fridge for 24 hours it goes. Make sure this is done only after the casing layer is colonized as much as it needs to because with the cold shock your trying to stop the vegatative growth and if you do that before light and fresh air can hit the myc you'll be hurting your casings..
Casings don't need cold shocking other than the initial 8-10 degree temperature drop from incubating to fruiting in 98% of the cases. Cold shocking really interferes with any good pinning strategy when it comes to casings where you want the switchover transition from vegetative growth to generative to coincide with the surface colonization without sacrificing the momentum which is what gives you the most bang/pins for the buck/effort. hmmm.. i figured a drop of 8-10 degrees will be hard to achieve considering i do not have a temperature regulator in the fruiting chamber?
How bout dunking the PF cakes right after they come out of the jars and before breaking them up for casing?
Dunking cakes before casing isnt necessary since the crumbled cakes have plenty of water available from your casing layer
why not just unplug the whole mess for one night (12 hrs). a drop to room temperature would be sufficient to induce pinning (imo) and the temperature gradient for the fruiting chamber back to optimal pinning is small enough to be overcome quickly. correct me if i am wrong, but colonization temps are about 10 or so deg. above fruiting temps, yes?
exactly. if you use the incubator for the casing layer colonization (1-3 days), the switch to the fruiting chamber is usually enough to induce pinning, IME.
