Don't worry you're not alone... It's the same in the UK, we have to pay an annual fee. I can't remember the exact figure approx. ?100. It's called a TV License the money funds the BBC, it supposedly allows them to continue producing quality programmes. Bizarrely, you don't need a license to own a black and white TV.

Hmmm... doesn't a cable bill cover that kind of stuff? That's the way it works here in the states anyway.

We get our cables bills separately. We pay a subscription to a satellite or cable company (Sky, NTL...) You see here we have 5 terrestrial channels: BBC1 - Paid for by the license fee. BBC2 - Paid for by the licensing fee. ITV1 - Independent company gets revenue from advertisements. Channel 4 - Same as above, but I believe they have asked the government for a subsidy to help them deal with the "switch over" to digital television. FIVE - *shudder* Same as ITV1, famed for shows such as 'Naked Jungle' etc..

isn't it an "honor" system, though? i had a tv while i lived in norway for 2 years and never paid a shit, because it wasn't technically a "tv" it was a "moniter" (so it shouldn't have been able to connect to NRK, for example... even though it did!)

I think ?100 a year is a small price to pay for the BBC when you look at what you actually get and also look at the quality of the programming. People pay Rupert Murdoch somewhere around ?40(?) per month for countless channels of absolute dross.

In the UK is it a criminal offence to own a television without a TV licience, and you could face a 1,000 ukp fine. They even have guys go round in vans with detection equipment that can sniff out signals a tele puts out.

Not quite, still need one but its is around 40 ukp, rather than 120.

actually stonedphuxor you do still have to pay a licence fee if you own a black and white tv, although i doubt anyone owns one of those anymore.
its usually about half the price you pay of a normal licence.

I know..... IMO BBC 2,3,4 and News24 are generally excellent great. It's BBC1 and its never ending supply of Strictly Come Dancing clones. Not to mention those bloody DIY shows, if it wasn't for Bargain Hunt I don't know what I'd do.
