It has a large pickle jar with a 5-15 gallon fish tank heater. The container is an extra large Styrofoam cooler from walmart. Took a walmart thermometer with humidity and cut a slit for it the sensor is on the bottom of it.

  Nice incubator set up.

A suggestion?  Putting in a small computer fan to blow the air around will create more uniform heat distribution throughout your incubator.

Good work and good luck

First off good work, now for a few suggestions. I would put the pickle jar/heater in the center and arrange the jars around it on both sides. One other important thing I would turn the jars around every few days so that one side isn't facing the heater all the time, otherwise it will dry out. Just revolve them every few days. Good luck.

Can anyone tell me how many jars 1/2 pints you can birth in a 30 gallon Tupperware container? I have 11 1/2 pint jars and 6 pint jars and about 5 Tupperware containers 2 big fish tank pumps and a bag of perlite, I also have 2 Styrofoam coolers 5 gallon size.

Is it best to just put 2 cakes per container?

Thanks in adavnce

You might eventually want to invest in a thermal pad heater, only because those fish-tank heaters draw soooo much power.

You just stick the thermal pad heater onto a cheap cookie-tray, and put a cookie-rack on-top of that. Then put your mini-cpu fan inside, with the thermal controller probe between the cookie-tray and cookie-rack.

For an added bonus, put some thermal foil bubble insulation on all the walls. It reflects/insulates 90% of the radiated heat. This is what pizza delivery bags are lined with. (Sold at hardware stores)

In the end, it will only cost you pennies a day to operate your incubation chamber, not dollars a day!

Fish tank heater, (Coil = high resistive wire filament = 80W-320W)
Basically it is a toaster coil, or high density light-bulb filament.

Thermal-Pad, (Sheet = thermal piezo heat element = 8W-20W)
This in combination with the above setup would be the best, the tank heater would bring temps up faster after "Checking in" on your stuff. While the other one would maintain the temps once the temp was back to normal.

You would set the fish tank heater to maintain 75 (Your emergency fall-back temp.), while the pad was set to turn off at 80. (These are examples only!

If your setup is well insulated, then the thermal pad would easily maintain 78-80, stopping the fish tank heater from turning on.

If you really want to find out exactly how much your "Hidden" costs of your operations are. Buy a thing called "Kill-A-Watt". You put in your KWh rate, and hook up your device that needs monitoring. After a week, it will show you how much it costs to run that device.

(NOTE: put twice the value of KWh in there, as you get charged KWh and KWh service charge... which are about the same. EG, KWh = $0.14 so you actually pay about $0.28 after service/delivery/fees.)

That is why hydro-weed can't keep up with dirt-weed... Dollar for dollar, it just cost more to make! (Dirt-weed, almost free.) (Hydro or Greenhouse, costs about $15.00 per $40.00 bag.) (Most weed sold now is NOT organic or natural! Most is laced or grown with some questionable substances... Don't argue with me until you have tested your junk! Over 90% of the stuff from busts in the USA now, has been tested and shown that "Other" stuff is present. Other = Ammonium-Nitrate, Coke, LSD, PCP, Ritalin, Speed, Miracle-Grow, formaldehyde, PCB's, Bacteria, Mold, Excasty, arsenic, boric-acid, ecoli, mildew. Etc... These are not "Traces" these were "Saturations".)

I could be wrong here, but take a good look at the jars in the pics. It looks to me like the mouth may be smaller than the middle of the jar. This could pose a problem.

If a cake doesn't want to slide out of a jar when its time to birth is it safe to sterilize a knife and poke it a couple times to break it up a little to remove it easier? Or are there any better methods?
