Son Seals
    #3528854 - 12/21/04 08:28 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

One rough and tough life layed to rest. RIP

Frank "Son" Seals, a blues singer and guitarist who electrified the Chicago blues scene with his gritty performances, has died. He was 62.

Seals died Monday in a Richton Park, Ill., nursing home of complications from diabetes, said Bruce Iglauer, president and founder of Alligator Records, and the producer of Seals' nine albums for the label. Seals recorded two albums for other labels.

"He operated at a rock 'n' roll intensity level," Iglauer said Tuesday. Seals was in his late 20s when he began playing in South Side clubs in the early '70s, and his performances challenged audience notions of polite, country bluesmen.

"The public wasn't ready for a bluesman of this intensity and integrity that was so young," said Iglauer.

Seals was born in Osceola, Ark., and began his musical career as a drummer. He switched to guitar and was leading his own band at age 18. He moved to Chicago in 1971 and found regular work in South Side clubs.

In 1973, Alligator released Seals' debut album, "The Son Seals Blues Band." He was part of a group of emerging Chicago blues musicians that included Hound Dog Taylor and Lonnie Brooks.

"When he hit the bandstand, you could tell he meant what he was talking about and singing about," said Brooks. "It gave me the chills. He made you believe him."

Throughout the '70s, Seals toured constantly. His rough vocals and slicing guitar drew praise from critics. Rolling Stone magazine called Seals' 1976 "Midnight Son" album, "one of the most significant blues albums of the decade."

Seals continued to record in the following decades. He also kept touring, at home and in Europe, while sharing stages with B.B. King, Johnny Winter and the jam band Phish.

A lifelong diabetic, Seals kept performing even after part of his lower leg was amputated five years ago. He played his last live show this past October.

"He was a true bluesman. He thought that the important thing about the music was to soothe people's souls," Iglauer said.

Seals is survived by his sister, Katherine Sims, and 14 children.

I'm not sure, food poisoning I believe. Ate lunch with my work crew at the same resteraunt and no one else got sick. I had left over food I cooked for supper the night before and it was fresh as can be then.

It wasn't fun, I feel a bit better now but I'm still not all there. I'm going to try eating again right now.
