Problem getting casings to pin
    #3528682 - 12/21/04 07:43 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I know thgis has been asked before, and it usually has to do with conditions not being optimal.

But I have a martha set-up, with ultrasonic, and cool mist, humidity is 85% almost constantly, and temps are 72-76 degrees.

I am using GT strain, with BRF substrate, and just verm as casing layer. Substrate layer is a depth of 3-4", with 1/4" casing layer.

No contams, colonised great, but the damn things wont pin. Why??

Just verm as the casing layer. Casing layer needs something for the mycelium to grow in (coir or peat moss). Verm is also hard to tell when dry but this will cause growth to slow down on top of the slow growth due to verm not being airey enough. Humidity should be at 95-99% for pinning. I bet the verm is to dry and not colonized much. When you mist does the verm move when the water hits it? If so, it was to dry.. Thats a pretty thin substrate layer too so expect small shrooms, especially if you keep the humidity that low. Once pinning humidity should stay 90-95%.

So it um....has to do with conditions not being optimal..

Lol, okay, sorry. I read somewhere a few time that casing need to be at 85% humidity. or i read it wrong. oh well.

Actually though, the casing is extremely colonized, with rhizo growth everywhere. Its got a ton of knots on it also. It just wont pin.

Ill send a pic shortly.

If they truley are knots..those are pins and should change color 1-3 days after they form and elongate and start growing as mushrooms.
