CASING WITH ONE CAKE
    #3527904 - 12/21/04 03:21 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I have a bit of a problem. I was hoping to case the next round of BRF 1/2 pint jars, I have four that have been inoculated. The adversity is here. One jar took off very quickly, and is almost done colonizing. Another jar has one quarter sized splotch of mycelium on the bottom, and the other two jars have not showed even one splotch of myc. So only one jar will be ready to case. Can I case one jar? If so can someone direct me to the appropriate source. Also...why are they colonizing at different speeds. I used the same spore syringe and all jars were sterilized at the same time???

speed can be many things, mix may not be even (moits/nute), maybe spores where not evenly distributed.
Did you shake the syringe before using it?

If I had to case one cake I would fruit it from its own jar.

Im newbe too but since one can use everything as a container for casing, the best fitting container in this situation is its own jar.
Just take lid away scrape some verm away (if it isnt colonized) and apply the casing layer.

Goto Walmart and check out their ziplock and Glad mini-tupperware. Half pints would fit perfectly in the 8 oz. ones. Then just put a Ziplock bag over it, spray the sides of the bag and it should generate its own humidity. Be sure to put something underneath it to soak up extra water if there is some. U dont have to fan it or give it light, when u come to harvest you exchange enough air and light. Tho, during the pinning stage I would suggest 8 hrs of light if u can. If not, its cool. Same thing with 18 oz. plastic Solo cups:

1. Crumble up ur cake
2. Evenly put it into ur mini-case
3. Put a 1/4" or so layer of verm, or 50/50+ if u got it on top.
4. Put a plastic bag on, spray sides of bag, and if using solo cup then spray the sides of the cup.
There is a tek for this somewhere.

1. take a bucket
2. throw perlite or geolite at bottom fill that layer for 75% with water (add some H2O2 to water if you can)
3. put alufoil around your jar (so it get dark and the pins dont come from the sides)
4. Apply casing layer and put in the bucket.

Spray and fan 3-4 times a day

Easy way to fruit one cake as a casing. If you crumble it it is damaged and it wont give you much higher yields. IMHNO!

O probably, but not neccesary. casing are made with a number of whole cakes too, or sliced. One cake in a jar with a casing layer IS a casing IMHNO.

In any case, crumbling the cake won't hurt the myc at all, it will just agitate them a little bit, maybe make 'em slow down for 12 or 24 hours, but they'll have to establish a myc network in the casing anyways, which takes time.

my last comment on this, when you have a cake in a jar and you wanna case it, that container IS the case. Only apply the casing layer is left to do. No shopping or whatever.
YOu can go fancy with crumbling it, it will certainly NOT help you in this CASE!.

imhno

While your correct that that would be a casing...it is better to break up the mycelium. I've found that unbroken up mycelium doesnt colonize casing layers as well. When you break it up you add more contact points to the casing layer..more surface area for the casing to touch.

These are about the same length but which has more surface area (contact points)? The hills and valleys are benifical IMO and experience. Take it how you like

lol yes makes sense, about it penetrating the casing layer better. You are quite an artist SMR!

But again I dont know if it is worth the hassle to do all that for 1 cake. Maybe just dunk and roll?

The point of making a casing is to spread the colonized substrate into a thinner layer so there is MORE exposed surface area for fruiting.

Leaving it in the jar does not add any more surface area to the substrate. I'm not saying it wouldn't work, but spreading it out to a 1" layer will probably yeild more.

Yeah sure but to crumble and case a 2,5 inch cake into a 1 inch casing...
I personally dont find it worth the work, besides the cake as casing might produce some larger fruits. Im not that yield horney and I like big mushrooms too.

All IMHO ofcourse.
But sure one could case it by crumbling etc only I would not start casing that way with only 1 cake....

Yeah I agree if you case a single cake you'll either end up with a small casing or a thin one. It probably wouldnt be worth your time and you probably wouldnt get any more mushrooms out of it then if you just dunked and rolled it. You'll probably end up with a thin casing since thats what most people do and small mushrooms and wondering why.

Casing in the jars is and old tek..been around for years..you may not have the surface are but you can put a dozen quart jars in a pretty small rubbermaid cased in the jars and you'll end up with BIG shrooms and LOTS of flushes...though not the most bang for your buck..

Why not cook up some more jars of substrate and transfer the mycl.?
no! bad idea?

Its a nice "inbetween station" for thosewho have masterd teh cakes and find plain casing too hard or too much work.

I will try it maybe case in the jar just to see what happens.

Thanks smr I like exchanging opinions and thought with you cause its informative and "prickeling" (dont know english word lol) maybe "triggering thoughst is what I mean with prickeling)!

Yup. when the cake is fully colonized, dunk, drain then case right in the jar. Had no problems getting the mycelium to mend with the casing - if so, incubate - and the results can be relatively impressive ... for one cake.

Happy Holidaze!
