heating up of the substrate
    #3516518 - 12/18/04 07:22 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

i inoculated columns of pasteurized straw with 23% rate of moist spawn
/dry substrate.
the strain is phoenix oyster

6 days from the inoculation (PDPA)

the spawn 7 days from the inoculation(fully colonized)

pasteurization for 70 minutes at 71C\160F

3 foot(90cm) long 12 inch(30cm) diameter column + 100 holes.

after less then 24h at 24C\75F room temperature the substrate temperature reach 30C\86F.

i changed the room temperature to 18C\60F but the substrate temperature reach to 32C and more.

what is the problem ?
is it the big rate of spawn+"aggressive strain" for sure ?

The heat is caused my the mycelium digesting food, expanding, and all the other life cycle processes. Just as us humans produce heat when we burn energy, so does mycelium. Temperatures will rise with deep substrate core depths. I would raise temperatures to that or just below spawn run temperatures. Monitor core temp. If it starts pushing into the 90's, then it could start slow growth. I believe most species could survive a 100F, but colonization will be slower than optimal (contamination threat also). Too much heat will cause a thermal death of the mycelium...

Sachar,

I guess you have received your syringes. My dowels were confiscated by the ministry of agriculture and I am waiting for entry license for them. I should have gotten license upfront... Good luck anyway.

I remember you have pasteurized you substrate, but maybe it is composting?

it is not composting but to much spawn and the lack of air circulation.
i inoculated 2 new columns with 10% spawn, added a fan and everything is alright of now.
