    #3525424 - 12/20/04 07:39 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

hey folks.

You know what type this is?

I'm having a hard time IDing these. It's the one on the left that's tough.
Spores: Brown (light)
gilled yellow with cobweb-like veil
Found in clusters on wood chips under pine tree.
Orange pileus
light yellow stipe found up to 6cm

Perhaps. but a funny thing is that someone cut (picked) many of them prior to my notice. I question their motive.

Cortinarius sounds right. They are difficult to ID to species and certainly should not be eaten. As to why someone harvested them? Perhaps the person who harvested them thought they were Gymnopilus; let's hope they took a spore print.

shoot, I just realized my fallacy I did not even consider gyms..

yes, I think those could be mistaken for gyms, and maybe they are????..

But for now my thinking on gyms is : until there is further research to species identification and potency variation and dosage issues, I will stick to stuff I can be sure about.. Why take a chance?

Light brown spore print rules out Gyms. Plus the caps appear to be viscid.

Yes the caps are very sticky (viscid). What does Gyms spore print look like? I'm thinking the one on the right is in the Bolbitiaceae family.

The spore prints of Gymnopilus are orange to rusty brown, mostly towards the orangish colors. Another very important feature for Gymnopilus is that they grow from wood, not the ground.

Gymnopilus are similar to Pholiota and Cortinarius. Pholiotas have more brownish spore prints and usually slimy caps. Cortinarius grow on the ground, not from wood. They are easy to confuse, and there are species that have moved from one genus to another.

Happy mushrooming!

interesting. I think I'll take another print of these since they were growing on wood chips.
