newbie questions
    #3523939 - 12/20/04 11:04 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I'm trying to grow for the first time and was wondering on average how long it should take until time to harvest. I know it depends on a lot of different things, but i just wanted a rough estimate. I am planning on casing instead of growing straight from the cakes, if that makes a difference. Also,in beginners terms, what does a pressure cooker actually do to the growing process? Thanks for any help, these are questions that I couldn't find directly explained on the site.

4-6 weeks.

>what does a pressure cooker actually do to the growing process?

It sterilizes the substrate.

It's a big jump going strait into casings and skipping good practice w/cakes. Don't get your hopes up too high. Casings are more prone to contams so be very careful & very clean. When I say clean I meen STERILIZE EVERYTHING!

You might want to try grain and casings right now if you have access to a pressure cooker, but do cakes at the same time.  It will improve the chances of success dramatically

Here's some cue for you :

Follow the PF-Tek
Build a Poor mans pod
Get familiar with dunking and rolling your cake.

Search for this and you will be bullet proof for good results, as long as you work clean.

Let me repeat this once again : as long as you work clean

.fs.

If you don't have a PC you can boil sealed jars in a large pot w/lid on med heat for 60-90 min. It has always worked for me. I'd rather use what I already have as long as it has good results. All of my jars have been 100% contam free using this method. The oven tek on the other hand has always ended in contams for me.

Casings are pretty easy. Just sterilize/pasturize your casing materials and you should be good.

You have to make sure you keep the air as clean as possible too. My major problem with casings is, you can't see everything. This makes early detection of contams nearly impossible. You can only tell if it is contaminated on the top. That is a pretty small % of your area.

After the dunk you roll it in vermiculite. Then you spray the verm so it gets moist. This way more moisture is available for the myc.

Put in terrarium after rolling it.

After you dunk your cake you roll it in verm/perlite and get a good coat all around it.
