Over Rolled?
    #3524442 - 12/20/04 02:23 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Hello people,

Can one overroll the cake? Making it harder / longer for the mycelium to fruit?

This is the matter:
A week ago I had my first fruiting cake. (cake1)
I had another one of the batch in incubator which was finally ready now as well (after a good 6 or 7 weeks) (cake2)
So I dunked cake2, took it out after 20 hours and re-dunked cake1 for the second flush.

I rolled cake2, and the mycelium is completely covered with verm. Cake1 is fruiting again but cake2 doesnt have any sign of it.

They are in same terrarium. Did I roll it too much, or dunk too long maybe? Or something else?

Thanks,
MF

I dont think you can roll it in to much verm. I lterally cover my cakes so all you can see is Verm. Sometimes they take a little longer to pin than others. My average from birth to pinning is 5-6 days with an ocassional 7-9 days.

I would just be patient.

Ehm I have an interim, its a 5 gallon "baby tub". A transparant PP bucket. With geolite @ the bottom and an airpump in. NO lid just transparant plastic (thick foil).
I wave away the Co2 a few times a day. And spray the walls 2 times a day. Maybe not really needed but follow the feeling here..
Its a poormans-poormanspod actually!

I have bought all materials for the real poormans pod, a 32 gallon rubbermaid, 50 liters geolite (enough for a long period), airpump. But since  the products of my incubator are somewhat below ehmm my wishes I decided to put up the interim terrarium.

One cake in a 32 gallon PMP looks somewhat ehmm  hehe overdone!

Also I destroyed one rubbermaid when I wanted to hammer a screwdriver through the walls to make holes for the airhoses..
Hhehe, Ill try to fix it with glue or something, its a waste of rubbermaid otherwise!

And you, do you have a project goin on now?

Just trin to get some clean spawn started. It's been awhile since I've grown.
Just some helpful advice:
When I did cakes I had the most luck in a 5.5 gallon fish tank with a plexiglas cut to fit the top(with jigsaw not hammer  ).And filled with 1/2 inch of perlite and a bubblestone in a glass full of a light peroxide and water solution. You can fit as many a six 1/2 pints in there and it's very easy to clean. tank $7, bublbler $5, plexiglass $5. (usa dollars) not bad

Someone named Fucknuckle who used to stop by claimed to roll his cakes 3 times at least every time until it was the size of a softball and that would help his flushes greatly. He never posted any pictures of anything so take it as you may. I dont think it would really hurt but I think there would be a point where you'll be working the mycelium harder then needed.

Yeah thanks but I already have a transparant 30 gallon rubbermaid now. With transparant lid. And one broken, which im gonna repair (at least try to, I have two left hands  )

Did you also try the bubblestone IN the perlit? I heard that doesnt always work out that good. Cause geolite is more robust (and less messy) I bought that instead...

Probably a good idea I don't miss the perlite it got all over everything. You don't need to put the stone directly into the perlite, which i think is unsanitary, but if you put it in a small container filled with a sterile solution then cleaning you equipment (stone) is a lot easier. I imagine putting the stone directly in your geolite/water would subject it to unnecessary contamination that you'll transfer to your next batch. I found the stone an easy way to introduce fresh air to the container. That peroxide solution should also keep down contams comming through that air out the stone. Anyways, you'll find your own personal set-up of your liking.
I find that you don't have to do everything everyone else does, but just enough so that you feel confident it's going to help.

Agreed, on finding your own way. My way is with the airstone IN the geolite though.
I add some H2O2 too.

Scatmanrav thanks for the answer. But strange cake1 is fruiting now (pinning started 2 days ago) and cake2 still no sign of it. Same strain same badge of cakes...

Cake1's 2nd flush is 10 mushrooms pinning packed together from 3 square inches at bottom rest of cake is no pins.

Maybe it has been in incubator too long, that the myc is tired or something..

He said when he did it that it took longer for them to pin, but once they did they produced massive mushrooms..that was the point of multiple rolls. More rolls will definatly slow things down..but shouldnt STOP things.

Thanks!

Make sure the verm stays moist to promote growth through it an make sure your fanning lots to promote pinning...stalling is common..it should resume if you provide optimal conditions.

Good luck!

Yeah smr but its in same conditions as other cake, dunked rolled, same batch same cake mix same tarrarium, same airpump, same fanning and spraying (thought not too much since I have the airstone in geolite) the verm is moist at the bottom almost too wet...
Buttt we have faith and I hope your wish is helping it to fruit!

Every cake and casing will be different. That is why you always hear everyone saying things cant be predicted..

LOL I dont hear everyone say that, but I agree with it. ANd they ARE different in the first place cause cake1 finished colonising more then a week earlier.

>>>>>>They are in same terrarium. Did I roll it too much, or dunk too long maybe? Or something else?<<<<<<<<<<<

I'm not sure it's that easy to 'overdunk.' I accidently left a few cakes dunked for 5 days in the fridge and they actually fruited faster than my standard 12-24 hr dunks (with good results: 4 cakes ranging from 62g to 74g wet each on 1st flush).

I thought for sure I had drowned them...

Anyway, I'm going to experiment a bit more with the longer dunk once my current cycle is finished.

be well

I had heard that dunking PF cakes for over 24 hours can make them turn to mush...I did some rye cakes (just the whole grain in pints left as cakes dunked and rolled) for fun and they were dunked for 5-6 days as well..people told me that was odd though. Either way overdunking is supposed to just cause them to turn to mush and shouldnt happen until after 48 hours..according to those on the topic when we've discussed it before.

OK so the dunking cant be the harm, was thinking of that cause I dunked him longer then cake1...
(still no pins)
