Streaming MP3 software
    #3524327 - 12/20/04 03:34 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Does anyone know of any software that would enable you to browse through another (willing) person's mp3 collection and also listen to streams of the tracks? I heard that an old version of iTunes had a feature similar to this.

The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

The easiest and most common ways of doing that are to either use remote administration like the one available in windows system tools on any XP system.. or to have the music host set up a free ftp server with his music directory as the root. With the ftp, you could just connect with flashfxp and open or transfer the tracks you want to hear.

Abyss Personal Web server (free) would be similar to the ftp method except it would be http instead of ftp. It's a little more difficult to set up but better for streaming.

I already use a program called cactus share which I can use to browse through friends' files.  I was just particularly interested in the possibility of streaming them rather than having to download each one you might want to listen to.  Thanks for the replies.

I would just setup a FTP server, thats what me and all my friends do. Download all the files you want. Personally I am not a fan of remote administration because its made by MircoCrap and full of security holes.
