More Newbie Questions..
    #352400 - 07/01/01 10:18 AM (24 years, 12 days ago)

Hey everyone, I have a couple more questions for ya!
1.For fresh air exchange in the terrarium, would a circle of holes on each side covered with a coffee filter suffice, or would it need more than that?
2.Are pressure cookers with PSI gauges necessary for sterilization, or will non-gauged ones work? If they would, how do I know what PSI the sterilization is taking place at, and how long should I sterilize for?
Thanks everyone!

1. Coffee filters would probably be a bad choice. Most likely moisture would build in them, making them a source of contamination instead of a defense against it. Best bet is to get some filters from NuShroom.

2. The cooker doesn't *have* to have a gauge, it's just a convenience. The pressure is determined by the weight the rests over the pressure outlet. When your 15 lb rated weight starts rocking/releasing pressure, you know the pressure in the cooker is over 15 lbs. The weight probably says right on it what it's rated for. Proper labeling is important for safe operation, ya know.. Sterilization time depends on the size of the jars and the substrate you're using. I cook pints of rye grain for 70 min @ 15 psi.

What gets rewarded, gets done.
