i've seen those before.. i think i have some in my yard every now and then.. but, i'm not sure what it is..

Better pic please, especially of the tops of any branches.

That pic is too ambiguous for me. I think it infact looks like Cosmos, which is a type of wildflower.

I can't remember, but I did smell it and it smelled of a pleasant aroma, perhaps edible.

The fennel bulbs are edible, many uses in cooking.. but licorice? eww..
