cakes stopped colonizing

Ok, well I turned the jars upside down and tapped them and they just won't colonize anymore. I've heard the suggestion to sterilize a knife and just cut away the uncolonized portion, but theres about 1/3 of the top of the cake thats patchy between being only LIGHTLY covered in mycelium and not being covered at all. Should I just begin the fruiting process even though theres some areas that arent colonized? What would happen if I just begin fruiting with the jar the way it is - does that give a greater risk of contamination? I'll try to post a pic later cause I know that will be more helpful, but these babies just havent grown any more myc in the past week or so.

I would say that fruiting them with uncolonized portions gives you high odds of contamination. If its only been a week, keep waiting. Make sure your jars are at 84-86 degrees. Sometimes jars stall out and you just have to wait a while. Try drawing with a marker the edge of the myc, wait 3 days and see if it has crossed the line at all. Also , they can stall because they are not getting any gas exchange. put some tinfoil over the tops and loosen the lid a little.

AFOAF has a jar that's doing the same thing. Only though there seems to be a couple dark spots, not on the mycelium, but in the uncolonized portions. Looks as if it's drying out, but there are visible water droplets between the mycelium & the jar. Doesn't look like contam.

In theory he could...

(In a sterile enviroment of course)

Remove the cake from the jar, remove the mycelium, transfer it in to some sterile H2O & knock up some jars with it, right?

Right. Might be alittle difficult to peel mycelium off of media. Just throw a little bit of colonized grain in some sterile karo water and incubate.
