Making Salvia D extract.
    #3520960 - 12/19/04 05:24 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Im in the middle of making a batch of slavia extract. What should i use to filter the leaf matter out of the isopropanol? a coffee filter? Would a cofee filter filter out to much, like all the salvinorin? Also what is the vaporization temperature of Salvinorin?

coffee filter isnt worth your trouble - Just use a cup up tee shirt and make sure you squeeze all the goodness out.

Probably means cut up...just like a square of a t-shirt

use the t shirt as the filter to run the liquid through into the cup and then squeeze the clump inside the t shirt over the cup also to get the rest out.

I use a french coffee press to remove the biggest chunks (a t-shirt filter will also work), than let the sediment settle and decant through a coffee filter.

If you get rid of most sediment through decanting, your dilute extract will go through the coffee filter very easily and will be of a very clear green.

I am assuming you'll be extracting powdered leaf.
If you use crushed leaf you don't need to bother this much but your extraction will not be as eficient.

EDIT -> No filter will remove the salvinorin A out of solution. You use solvents in which your active is soluble in so you can filter out the inactives.

coffee filters can work well though i find that they tend to clogg very easily. the coffee filter won't catch the salvinorum unless it has "fallen out" of the alchohol solution by adding water. read this to see what i mean...

salvia blotter teck

anyway, yeah a piece of a t-shirt would probably be your best bet for filtration. though, based on what i read, the best way to get an ultra clean ipa solution is to let the tannins fall out. because even with good filtration, a lot passes through. check out this other salvinorum extraction teck from erowid...

salvinorum tincture tek

this teck calls for what you're using (99% Isopropanol) as it's organic slovent. i was hoping on performing this tek in the future but have had trouble locating the 99% Isopropanol. where exactly could one find this (no need for specifics, just the type of store)?

don't filter it out collect the extraction fluid by
pouring off the acetone or alcohol into a settlement vessel
and then squeeze out the remaining alcohol or acetone maybe using the bottom of a glass (filters will not release the good stuff and might introduce new compounds) or other clean nondissolving implement
you will want to use a bit more solvent to get out anything good remaining in the leaf material and squeeze that out too.
then let it settle (covered - don't want evaporation yet)
at least 12 hours (longer if you can)
then pour off hte good stuff from the particulate sediment
now you can start your evap phase etc.

really? the only types of alchohol i've come across were isopropyl 70% and isopropyl 91% at drug stores. is isopropyl and Isopropanol pretty much the same? anyway, thanks. my hunt will continue :mushroom2:

If you want to get (99% Isopropanol) get a job at a print shop. Most print shops use it depending on what material your printing on.I would say more but this is the Internet after all.
