Mush Millet
    #3519614 - 12/19/04 04:57 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Hello

Im simmering a mix of Rye and Millet now after +20 hours of soaking.

THe millet however turns into mush and mini flakes. Is this bad for the substrate?

Also I noticed a bit sour smell from the soaking jars before I simmered. What can that be?

Thanks,
MF

Sounds like you used "hulled" millet. Millet that has HULL removed.

Not GOOD, as hulled millet turns to MUSH.

Sour smell is BAD, like hulled millet started to ROT.

Thanks Agar, indeed it was hulled millet I think. If that means that the "shell" has been removed.

Hmz shall I throw it away or give it a try? I already PC-ed it.....

I personally think you may be soaking too long also .

But yes know that I got that term correct ... use grain with the hull still on .

Sour smell = fermentaion = not good for mush teking , too bad so sad

Why do folks "simmer" grains ?
Why not just get moisture content correct , then PC ! Sounds like alot less work  Maybe I am just a fat lazy American

Hmz, in the teks it was said to soak millet 24 hours. I soaked together with rye. And less then 24.
Many people say that the simmering is just that, to get water content right...

But thats the hard part for a novice, people telling this and that, what is the "trueth"?

In the end own trial and error is best teacher... Then you know from experience and not from "they say that... "

Will not try that "hulled" millet anymore. But I think its hard to get  EKO "unhulled" millet here.

I stick to RYE and WBS from now on I suppose......

And I will inoc one jar with the rye (3/4) millet (1/4) mix. Will see how it goes....

Thanks!

Can I drain the millet out and then use only the rye, and PC again?

Such a waste to throw it all away.. :frown:

LMAOH !!!!!!!!!!!
If it was me..........
The ole patience thing would be tested to the max , and I would see how fast I could run to the trash !

Hey MF if you keep having such a hard time finding decent grain give us a hollar and if you pay the nasty shipping cost (to netherlands) I 'll send ya a fat ass bag of some good grains (milo , millet(a variety of types), groats).
Only if,... not customs or agricultural laws would not apply .
I can not believe you Euros do not have pet birds  :crazy2:

MF You are very correct about nothing beats hands on learning , but trust us , you are wasting time if it has that smell ! And if all gooey , you will waste spores , spawn etc.........

Hmmz hey there again hehe..

I will check the petshop but 100% millet I havent seen there. But hey, no worries Ill stick to Rye and WBS for time being.

And I could not control my self, so in despite of the advice of you and agar I just knocked up a pint with that mix. And threw away 2 quarts.. :frown:

But now I will get the evidence, to see if it will grow or not. LOL and if the syringe that I made is contam free.

Tomorrow will buy rye (AGAIN!) and maybe some birdseed. But I am such a horney bastard every piece of grain I inoculate as soon as possible and I start incubating in the fridge cause I havent got any space left elsewhere..

No pain if the jar goes bad, just an experiment without any expactations!

Gonna post a Q now about quantity of spores in syringe and colonising speed....

Thanks Trippennnnnnn

I would guess adding verm would help with the mushyness if you wanted to experiment.. Rye isn't THAT expensive though so make sure you arent wasting spores or expecting anything from it..always fun to experiment though.

My guess is the mush would make it hard for the mycelium to spread..thick like..mixing in verm until its more airy (youd have to eye ball it) and feels like a good texture (hard to explain..hopefully you've made some good substrate with good texture) might help.

I would advice you to not simmer millet and rye for the same time period in the same pot because millet kernels burst sooner.Actually you don't have to simmer millet after 20hours of soaking but rye kernel is thicker than millet to be able to be simmered after 12hours or 20 hours .Btw.20hours is useless in my opinion if you still simmer.
Good luck!

Thanks guys!

I have one jar left in the fridge. Will try an add some verm. The ratio I used is about 1-3 (1 part millet, 3 parts rye) (25% is millet).

Another pint I just knocked it upp with 2CC. Indeed no expactations just getting me an experience...

Rye I try to follow Magash tek, it says 24 hours soak and 45 mins simmer. But ofcourse, for the small millets that can be far too much......

:thanx:

I will agree with stara as well..I mix WBS and verm in with my rye, the WBS just gets soaked for 24-48 hours, no simmer. Rye I soak and simmer though. Then mix it all up with some verm until I like the texture on a big screen drain I made for the sink untill its ll mixed up nice, not to wet, not to dry..then PC and go from there..

Hey cool!

I have just asked agar that, if it is recomended to use verm in grainjars. After he posted the difference between cakes, grain, and bulk/poo.

I thought adding verm can help the graincasing to re hydrate so produce better flushes after the 1st.

2 WBS teks I read differ in the simmer/soak part too, one written by 6T  and one by Doc34. I simmered my WBS only 5-10 minutes after 14 hours soak, it was fine at least the myc liked it before mister wetspot arrived.

:thanx:
