Gallons of soil for plot?
    #3517881 - 12/18/04 05:57 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Is there some sort of formula that can help you figure out how many gallons of soil needed when making your plot? I will be having two plots, one that is 7 x 3 x 2 (length x width x depth) and another that is 10 x 10 x 2 (that's gonna be a lot) and was curious if there was some way I could estimate how much I needed.

Thank you

l*w*d = cubic feet

cubic feet*7.48052 = gallons

10x10x2 is big :o

another thing, depending on what you're growing you might want to something similar to this http://users.aristotle.net/~shicks/sqft/index.html
imo 10x10x2 is too big to properly tend plants near the middle. you don't have to do above ground structures but 4x4x(whatever) are easier to control with ferts, watering, ect. and your plants will be happier.

Yeah that's what I planned on doing. I was going to put 2 boards on the plot, one going the length and the other going the width, as to make a + shape, which would divide the plot up into 4 sections. Thank you for that link.

Wait a second, that means I'll have to get 1496 gallons of potting soil? :whoa: :crying: :lipsrsealed:

(of course, I will be adding other things to the plot besides just potting soil)

U could probley skim the depth down a bit and just rototill the dirt up and put one foot of whatever mix.. but the dirt around here is preaty good most everywhere.

*1810 gallons

you really don't need more than a foot of good soil, the purpose of a deep tap root in plants is to anchor and pump water (through hydraulic lift) up to the younger roots with more root hairs (therefore better suited to absorb water and nutrients) which are closer to the surface. this usually happens at night when tranispiration is very slow or absent. nutrients are going to leach into the lower soil over time as well.

I would like to go with just one foot down, but from my understanding, poppies have deep roots and I don't know if one foot is going to do it. If I was to go down a foot in the soil, I would probably be meet with garbage clay. The soil around has a lot of clay in it, and poppies tend to like that loamy, well-draining soil - pretty much the opposite of clay soil.

I don't know how I would get that much soil though, and it would cost a lot of $$$. I may have to go with cutting a foot off of my depth anyway.

Poppies have real small shallow roots, 5-6" would do. Lay a layer of rocks at the bottom for drainage. Near me theres a compost heap you can go to and take compost for free, ask around at your local nursery's. A large bale of peat, a few bags of manure, a bale of hay, and a big bag of pearlite would help too.

Really? I always thought they had somewhat deep roots. I guess that 1 foot deep will work.
