SIZE MATTERS (females lie about it & mushrooms don?t)
    #3518613 - 12/18/04 10:04 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

SIZE MATTERS ( females lie about it  & mushrooms don?t )
NUTRIANTS MATTER
MOISTURE MATTERS

B/E (biological efficiency) factors. 100% B/E is 1 lb. Cubes per 1 lb. of substrate. Cubes are very capable of 200 + % B/E. Available moisture content is a CRITICAL B/E factor.

"Cakes" have their limits. Simply because they contain a large % of vermiculite.  Which significantly lowers B/E, because the vermiculite contains no nutrient value. However, vermiculite does have excellent absorption qualities, giving a cultivator the ability to re-hydrate cakes, which will increase the B/E of available nutrients in them.

Straight grain substrates (rye - millet - wbs - whatever) have a much higher B/E (because of more available nutrients). Excepting, straight grain substrates do not have the rapid absorption quality of vermiculite, they do not re-hydrate as well. Meaning. After a first (or 2nd) flush, straight grain substrates are more difficult to re-hydrate, for optimal performance.

Synthetic compost and/or aerobically made compost has the optimal nutrient values, as well as excellent moisture retention capacity, plus the ability to re-hydrate - very quickly. Given all these factors "compost" is the optimal substrate.

Then there is substrate SIZE (weight). Under identical optimal conditions, a 10 lb. ideal substrate will produce 10X  more fruit than a 1 lb. substrate.

Based on those factors, (& if you have a PC, or not) you yourself must decide which substrate to use.

Very informative. Where does casing fit in? If I were to case lets say, 5 lbs. of WBS with 5 lbs. Jiffy Mix (50/50 peat/verm), the B/E would be that of the WBS, correct?

ok so something sounds amiss, or not clear to me..
From what i read here , you can get twice (or better) the weight of product than the substrate weight. This has got to be wet weight.. Cause getting more than the weight of the substrate is impossible. Perhaps It would be better to measure in optimum dry weight, or get numbers for both.

WET WEIGHT........ for sure..NOT DRY WEIGHT.

85/92% of fruit body weight is water.

That is why optimal MOISTURE content in a substrate is important.

Minimal moisture = minimal fruits

HEy Agar about that size (I stop making compliments you are a kind of mushroom oracle you know how I appreciate your energy and information you put in this board)

But bout the size, the yield per LB of substrate is the same with 1 LB and with 10 LB, is that correct? Then the matter of size is relative

Ehm sometimes I read bout folks adding bit of verm to their grain before they PC it. Is that to be recommended or not!?

Thanks!

Is that shroom 124 grams wet or 12.4 grams wet? I had heard you posted a picture of a 124 gram shroom..can't tell from the pic which it is though. If it is 124 that the second shroom, pic or not that I've seen in double digits when dried..I got one from someone a long time ago..no idea about who grew or how grown but bertha was a beast. A majority of the mushies were between 3.5 and 7 grams too..whatever they were doing I wish I could talk to them..

Took about 20 months off, learning how to do normal things like eat, talk, piss, flush toilet, walk & enjoy life again after a bad car wreck. LOL...... once ya have them spores in your blood, they never leave . Still not all togather, but getting there.  I figured a new life & second chance to grow again deserved a new name. I thought agar was fitting. LOL,
