American Democracy
    #3518147 - 12/18/04 09:47 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Thesis:

"To think that we should pay attention to public opinion when the public is so stupid is really just to say that whoever is best at advertising should be in charge."

Agree, disagree?

If "the public is so stupid", who's smart? How can you tell?

You do realize the irony of this is that your opinion is considered "public opinion"?

So...who is this "Public"? An invisible, invincible, far away, obscure thing?

Public is Me ,you,Albert Hoffman,Hussen, your grocer, your barber, that friend you blaze joints with, the guy i met today at a tavern to organise a psychedelic graden....

DOes our behaviour change when we agrregate in masses? Does our IQ suddenly drop and our suggestibility invrease when in large numbers?

Assume the public is stupid, because the "when the public is so stupid" clause means the statement only applies to cases where the public is stupid.

Psiloman - there are lots of people who are stupid when non-aggregated. Think back to high school. Remember how stupid the average guy was. Think about the half of your high school class dumber then that guy.

Maybe it should say "majority" instead of "public" because public opinion can be won by the average guy and all the guys dumber then him. In this new formulation, Hoffman, etc, wouldn't be considered "public" which is more what I'm going for.

Hmmm.Agreed.

Then i can agree with your original statement. The one who can manipulate advertisment is in charge.

What would require some examination would be "what can we do about it?".In other words how can we stop the "advertiser" from reaching its target, from finding vunerable target or even better how can we increase numbers on non vunerable targets.

But isnt that what we have now?!!

If public opinion was consulted on more issues than simply picking our leaders once every few years it would make it far harder for special interest groups to carry out long term plans that really only benefit small minorities etc and who knows what other changes we would see in the level of intelligence displayed by the public. If you are to make decisions on multiple subjects interest suddenly it would become far more pertinent for you to actually educated yourself on some of the issues..maybe!  :smirk:

I agree. All opinions are not equally valid, although they should be treated as such.
