FROZEN CYANS and one Gigantic Stropharia and Relatives
    #3508851 - 12/16/04 01:31 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

WEll went out this morning at 7 am into Laurelhurst and nearby regions of the north side of the city.

Here is a glimpse of Mount Rainier at 7:25 am this morning:

And here are some of the many frozen cyans I found a half an hour later after catching the number 25 bus to Laurelhurst near Lake Washington. However, I am not allowed to give the exact location and since this is a large area, no problem.

and one with no icing.

And then later i found these Stropharia shrooms int he bush and one of them was really gigantic, as it says so in the heading of this thread.

Here are two images, one of the grouping and my scissors and a larger one in my hand form the image of those ont he ground. You can also see a chopped in half shroom. I did not do this, however, the underside was half eaten away by little critters of the tiny kind.

And here I am holding it in my hand

and there you have it. My feet are frozen right now. I had a warm bath and shower after returning hiome but my feet have not returned to normal yet.

I think this is close to the end of the season now. It is really too cold for too many more to return.

mj

Oh yeah. There were seven images byut I accidently sent number one tot he recyle bin and then went into the bin to restore it and accidently hit empty bin.

Sorry. IT was the best morning image of the frozen shrooms.

Oh well, next winter maybe.

Nice photos MJ.

Winter is here and the mushrooms are hibernating for a few months. What species are you looking forward to finding in the spring?

Blue ringers (P. stuntzii, P. fimetaria and P. sierrae) grow all year round if we have a mild winter, which we usually do. Last year int he heart of Seattle we had only two days of snow. one in March and another day in April.

WE did have a small freeze last year but two weeks later in the mid of December, more popped up of the cyanescens kind.

However, My feet were numb and now it is hours later and I am still weak on my cold feet.

We also have Panaeolus subbalteatus and Two Conocybe species. However, I always caution people to not collect the Conocybe because of their close association to the deadly Conocybe filaris and the three deadly Galerinas, which all sometimes mimic P. cyanescens and P. stuntzii and related species.

have a shroomy day,

MJ, why is it that I've had such tough luck in finding ringers this year, when Ive found so so so many cyanescens? I know that they grow in lawns, but I also read and hear that ringers will often be found growing near or next to cyanescen patches. Maybe its possible that I have seen some this season, but just overlooked them, although I really doubt that.

Its fairly simple and easy for me to locate cyanescens, or to pin down where I should be looking for them (alder mulch of course!)...very simple. But it seems ringers grow more sporadically, harder to pin down their habitat than cyanescens' habitat.

Nice pics by the way. I actually REALLY like the picture of Mt Rainer. Its a stunning shot.

Ringers grow in Lawns and in mulch. However, I have not seen any mulched stuntzii's since 1986. And the lawn variety is c becoming rare. This is due tot he conversion of pasturelands from Tukwilla to Kent and auburn being repklaced with one story non-poluting boeing ioffices and other small business ventures and storage and electronics firms moving into suburbuia.

The pasturelands were the main source of what use to be at least 70% oof alo new lawns use to have blue ringerts. You can ri ead of those massive adn common patches in the News Grape Vine section at my site.

Every Highschool field had blue ringers int he city at one time, as did all the community coleges west Seattle, south Seattle, North Seattle, Central on Capital Hill and Shoreline, Evergreen, Seattle University, the U of W and most new apartment condos and complexes new restaurants and nursing homes and most city parks had them and sometimes even liberty caps in the lawns of the city and the arboretum.

All of that has past.

As for alder mulch. you should be looking at braches, tqwigs and stems rather than the mulch which is fine woodchips. That would be steer-co. Those disappear also because of the stoppage of clearcuts int he PNW.

Now the cyans appear in the branches, twigs and broken stems rather than the woodchips (which were very fiune and small).

Baeocstis was rare, than very common for about 8 years and that disappeared with the disappearing pastures.

Bassett and WEstern landscap0ing supplies in Woodinville also participated in spreading shrooms with their sods with fertilizers from Meadowgold farms in nearbye Carnation, ashingotn. They changed their fertilizers and so there are few lawns int he city. Me adn @cro visited a lawn site and we found those soggty blue ringer images I posted at that location in the mulch as well as those three or so cyanofibrilosa specimens.

Anyway, That was the first stuntzii garden bed I found since 1986. I do have a few blue ringer lawns that use to produce by the thoudsans, but then the apartment complexes where the lawns were they got rid of the lawn service and so only a few pop up on one every now and then, But I did discover a new lawn and with them in the lawn and woodchips. The woodchips are over for the year for the ringers, but the lawn ones can grow throuout the year.
have a shroomy day,

mj

Can I get a copy of the original file?

If I could nominate non-shroom pics...yours would be a shoe-in.
