Shroomery Commune Ver. 8.09775 * 10^7

Hey, I know it's been a while since I've asked, but who's still up for building the Shroomery commune?
$5,000 a head is the target price. I'm looking into papercrete/fidobe structures as the most favored model.
http://www.calearth.org/
Check out the gallery.
If 10 people came up with $50,000 total and were willing to work at it for a summer it could be done well within budget in a rural location with few neighbors in the midsouth U.S.A.

Man I would totally do that if money wasn't a problem... I couldn't make 500 bucks nevermind 5 grand... Bills, bills, hobbies, and addictions take up alll and I mean all the money I have man...
If that ever works out I'd be down man... I know I'm like a "nobody" around here but I'd totally commune with you cats... Shit its a commune around my house as it is so having cooler people around would be the only change for me

I want to learn some of this stuff so I was checking out the link you posted to earthbag.com or whatever the fuck. Then I saw the apprenticeship program and I thought WOW COOL!!! I can go learn how to build earthbag houses with some more experienced people before I try my own. So I'm thinking well since I'll be giving a week or more of my labor to constructing someone's house maybe it'll be for free, or for enough just to cover the cost of my fraction of the construction supplies. Then I see It's $3,000 per person. Then I realized they are just another bunch of greedy pseudohippy capitalist cocksuckers.

I'm interested, and can pull together that kind of cash if I really need to (sell some stuff).
I like the idea of setting up a community out in a rural area. By carefully selecting the land, we can probably avoid building codes and other legal restrictions on our use of the land.
Papercrete, earthbags, straw bales - there are a number of different alternative building materials that we could use. Some will be more appropriate under different conditions, particularly how easy and cheap they are to obtain and the amount of rain we can expect.
Other things to we need to consider in building are plumbing and water supply, and heat, energy, and electricity. With 10 or so industrious and intelligent people, we should be able to make something really good.

Why does someone always want to buy an island. An island is totally not within reasonable reach as a goal.
Why don't we just build a flying cloud city instead. :/

Apprenticeship program?
We don't need no stinking apprenticeship program.
The school I go to is stuffed full of concrete experts. A few years back they won a concrete canoe building competition. They built a canoe out of cement, raced it, and won.
Hippies are afraid to use shit like plastic too. I'm not. Alot of them think portland cement manufacture is "environmentally unfreindly" and not "sustainable" because it's manufacture releases a bunch of CO2. What they don't realize is that when you add water it re-absorbs the carbon back into itself. So the only CO2 released is that caused by producing the heat required to de-carbeurize the stone.
The main goal here is cheap reliable housing, not an exercise in "sustainability".
It's not hard to become an expert in this field. I think about 1 out of every 3 people who build one of these houses writes a book about it or releases a video.

I think it would be a great idea if the shroomery crowd would go into online business adventures with me. Then we would have a better chance of building a community. I'd like to buy a whole resort over near the australian rainforests. Not only would we have a resort to run. We'd also have a place to live.
If anyone is interested in starting any type of online business let me know.

How about instead of Australia we do it in a poor hispanic country like Brazil, or Peru.
Then we can save the rainforrests AND bang 10? hookers all day.

Peru would be cool.
I like this idea BH. While an island isnt that far fetched, its more than most of us would be able to do. I think this would be a fairly reasonable project. I know nothing about these things, but I know some stuff about carpentry, surveying, excavation & roads. Also know a lil about electrical design, and like most alot about technology. The one thing that I know absolutely nothing about is plumbing.
5,000 isnt alot of money either. I am sure anyone here could make that in a few months if they tried.

I'd like to see an entire system of mini-communities spread out all over the country, maybe even some in Canada. Members could move to any vacant unit in the system.
Basically like a hybrid adobe nomadic timesharing network. Members could schedule time in one part of the country or another and live all over the US/Canada (and maybe South America, Europe,Australia, etc.)

why do it in the US? everything would cost a hell of a lot more than if we did it in Asia, S America, or Africa somewhere... I still have some schooling to finish, but am planning to try "living off the land" for a few years maybe 4-5 years down the road, probably in southern India because I can buy land off of family friends for dirt cheap...

I'd be completely in support of a commune
Perhaps you could find some old farmland with a few rather old farmhouses or silos and such on it, and have the commune people fix it and build around those. Maybe fix them up enough and some could live in them.

Grrrrrrrr No it is mostly ranch land. You would need a well. My sister lives outside El Paso Tx and she sent me some info about some mountian land that is almost impossiable to build on that land was dirt cheap too.
You know I like a challange .......... Check this thread tommorow I will post a bunch of links to cheap ass land.
I can get some very nice 10 acre plots in Northern MI with woods streams very nice for around 8,000-12,000 bucks

but land of that same "quality" wouldn't even run you $500 in parts of Asia or South America. Plus that land in Northern MI is un-farmable for half the year! I can't join this project for a few years, but I definitely think semi-tropical 3rd world is the place to look!

True but the cost of relocation needs to be taken into consideration. That is gonna be very costly unless you just go with a bag.
Plus what are the laws regarding moving there ?
What are you going to do for income ?
research.............

According to a report in today's Folha de S?o Paulo (subscription only), Lula's government of has reached a "consensus" to step forward into a bold new era of drug policy: decriminalizing the drug user nationwide, and opening 250 safe drug use centers across the country during the year 2005.
Lula is expected to sign an executive decree on November 24, taking drug enforcement responsibilities away from police agencies, and placing the problems of drug use under the jurisdiction of the Health Ministry, which will be charged with supporting the safe drug-use centers and make Harm Reduction - a policy to reduce the harms associated with drug use - the law of the land.
"After a series of internal disagreements about drug policy, the federal government is preparing a realignment of national policy to define drug consumption as a public health problem, and not one for the police as it is today.
"There will be a presidential order creating rules for treating drug dependents, with emphasis on Harm Reduction..." http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3376425/an/0/page/0
While it's not legalization, the recent change seems to be much friendlier to drug users, especially in comparison to the U.S. Seeing as that will be an important aspect of the commune, if we don't want to move to the relatively cold climates of the Netherlands or BC, Brazil may be an option to look into. Not to mention the land would probably be cheaper there

Another possible idea is for a commune to grow many edible shrooms and sell them. There is more than enough cultivation experience with psychoactive shrooms among the members here, and some have experience with edibles, so that may be another way for the commune to get some funds
Not to mention this would help give the commune some cheap food for itself
Just throwing around some ideas

I love this idea. I'm still in college, a bit young, but I would love to be a part of this if it is to become reality. I have always had the plan to live in some type of commune for at least a few years of my life. The idea of growing edibles sounds pretty good, since it will give the commune some income and a source of food. How will we be powered? Solar?

We'll put tiny dynamos on city water mains and drain energy from the pressure. Then we'll sell the power back to them at a profit.
Every time this comes up somebody mentions everybody working together in some kind of business. I'm not sure that's really practical or likely. People's skills will be diverse and many irrelevant and not very useful in combination, or at least it woluld be difficult finding a profitable activity that would fit well with their combined skillsets.
In order for the commune business to succede it seems likely that teams of complementarily skilled individuals would need to be selected to form a viable team. Members of this team would also need to be willing to agree upon a geographic location.
Perhaps you could sell Kirby vacuum cleaners.
Perhaps not.
