Hi, I'm a newbie here :-) It's been one week since I innoculated my jars and I've got nothing. Well, the jars have a weird smell(some guy on #shroom said it was normal) and where I injected the spores, the subtrate is a little browner. I've followed the MMGG and i used tap water and the temp. is about 82 F. Is it normal? Thanks alot. P.S. I've tried to search the archives but i haven't found anything. P.S.S. I've also ordered my spore from The Spore Lab, very fast service :)

You probably shouldn't get worried until about 10 days pass. They do have a somewhat odd smell to them, but it shouldn't be too strong. Maybe you didn't wait long enough after sterilization to inoculate?

Well all my cupboard smell like it. I also waited about 20 hours before innoculating them. And by the way, how much time can the brown rice flour can be kept ? Thanks. Hillman

Sounds like contamination to me. Wait a few more days before you give up on them, though. As far as I know, you can keep dry organic BRF indefinitely. But maybe the lack of preservatives gives it a shelf life, I dunno.

The substrate is a little darker because it has a higher moisture content. Where did you get your syringe from?(how dark was it)

I did a BRF+Brow rice+Vulc. Rock substrate, the BRF was made by grinding some BR with a coffee grinder but the coffee grinder had still some coffee in it, so the BRF was mixed with a little coffee, sterilize and innoculated, 7 days after innoculation the mycellium started to grow but some rice grains turned a bit brown when the mycellium touches it, those grains are the ones touching the glass, so i think it's because the extreme eat they got when Presurecooking, they might be "overdone" and lost some nutrients so they change color when mycellium tries to extract something from them. Any ideas why? Cheers, MAIA

Yeah, i firgured out that it was the extra moisture but i wanted to be sure. But with the bad smell, i'm pretty positive i've got some contamination going on. I got my syringe from the spore lab(Cap. Max Shroom) and the syringe was transparent but i could see the spore, it was not black covered, tho i would have appreciated. Also, the first two/three days i put my jars in a plastic bag with no opening. So maybe it's was bad idea because the bad smell started there. Hillman
