Young Shroomers
    #3515538 - 12/18/04 12:51 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hey guys, I have a friend with a little brother that's 14. He has just started doing 'shrooms. I was wondering about the mental effects of mushrooms on him. Could the chances of a bad trip be any more or less? Could the chances of having flashbacks or hppd be any more? Could it affect his overall mental health any more than if he started at a later age? He is pretty knowledgeable about it and uses the net to look up drugs. Anyway, I was just curious. Thanks in advance.

Egoloss experience (ie. bad trip to the unknowning?) can definately cause depersonalization and a loss of *real self*.. or a search for *real self* ... and this manifests in bizzare physical/social/mental situations...

its happened to many of us. Its all up to him, and use...

I wouldnt say its unhealthy, but... Impacting, and powerful.

I don't really know if it's bad or not, but it doesn't seem like a good idea for someone to messing with their brain's chemicals while their brain is still developing. Waiting until you're through with puberty would probably be better. That said, I wouldn't stop a 14 year old from taking shrooms. That's old enough to make an informed decision. It's his/her choice.

I know that didn't answer your question, but I felt like posting.

I took shrooms for the first time when I was either 13 or 14, I forget.

If he's looking up information about them on the internet then he's probably safer than an ignorant 18 year old, for example.

well said.

I don't think a 14 year old can make wise choices about things like this. You probably can't talk him out of doing it but you can try to tell him that it would be wise to do things like that a little later in life.

Well, I don't see being able to talk him out of it, because he is pretty itent on continuing. I don't think it will be much of a problem, though, because it's been a month since he started, he's only tripped twice, and he only took 1.5-2 grams both times. He SAID he doesn't want to do any more than that for fear of a bad trip. Oh well, his choice.

I did shrooms about that age, so I wouldn't worry myself too much about it as long as he's educated. If he's doing under 2 grams only occassionally, he should be fine

Have you introduced him to Erowid yet? The more information on the substance he's intent on continuing, the better informed his decisions will be

That happened to me, and is still happening. I think I was 15 or 16 when I first tried mush, but the after effects that are with me now didn't happen untill some zoomin when i was 17.

I guess it just depends what his mind is like right now. It might be no different than some 17 or 18 tripping too.

My little brother went stole some shrooms from my stash when he was 14 and ate them. He ate about 3 grams and it messed him up for weeks. I don't think someone should be subjected to possibly losing themselves until they have found themself. I won't say this depends on age, but I doubt many 14 year olds are ready for what mushrooms can do.

I agree. Not only is the brain still physically developing, 14 year olds are beginning that stage in life where you begin to wonder where you fit in and who you are. I wouldn't advise that you introduce hallucinogenic substances into the already confusing mix.

Someone I know started using shrooms at 14, and had ego-loss by the time they were 15. It definetely impacted them heavily, but I wouldnt say "damaged". It gave them a perspective that I think is healthy for a younger person to have.

My brother started to be interested in doing mushrooms in 7th grade and is now in 9th grade. so far he's tripped about 4 times where the 1st time he just "grabbed a handful" and ate them, and the other times less than an 8th. Being in only 9th grade, he's tried meth, coke, adderall, ambiens, mushrooms, smokes weed everyday, has drank, tried to buy some 2c-i off me, and wants to try LSD. He's certainly focused on drugs too much for a youngin'.

i did shrooms at the age of 12 same with marijuana, LSD, ecstasy, salvia, dxm, all in the span of a year and, it did of course give me a different perspective of life.. i finally let go of the problems that seemed to worry and trouble me so much, such qualities like worrying about my appearance or not being so dependent on material possessions it made me realize there is something more in life than the superficial qualities people these days seem so obsessed in...so in short i find that it's not age that matters but the power and ability to control and comprehend these tools have let's us free.

(but then again i was diagnosed with psychosis; so what do i know)

I'm a 30 year veteran 'entheogen enthusiast' and a clinical mental health counselor trained in developmental and clinical psychology - if that helps. I've been working with middle school kids as a substance abuse specialist for 19 years in our nation's 4th largest school system.

14 year old brains have 10 more years of physical growth which should NOT be interferred with by psychoactives - and this includes cannabis. Of course, adolescence is characterized by "Egocentricity" if you read the classic works by Erikson or Piaget, and so your brother is gonna be a little know-it-all. Well, he doesn't know it all, he's a kid. I'm 22 years past getting a Ph.D. and I certainly don't know everything, but I DO know what I'm talking about here. At 14 your brother stands a very good chance of messing up the psychological foundation for a healthy, resiliant ego-structure, without which one cannot develop normal personality. The healthy corollary to adolescent egocentricity is "self-actualization" - the quest for the answer to "Who am I?" Higher states of consciousness have to do with 'transcendence' of the ego, not the destruction of the ego, which constitutes psychosis. Transcendence includes but surpasses the perspective of the ego, and without a healthy ego to begin with, transcendence will not occur - decompensation may occur which is the mental breakdown of personality. This is as simple a description as I can come up with.

The age of 18 is not arbitrary. It is an age where certain cognitive abilities , like the ability to do algebra, to perform logical functions, is essentially in place. Physiological growth may continue for another 6 years, but I wouldn't recommend psychedelics before then. I grew up seeing 'acid casualties' in my generation, and a 14 year old is much more likely to experience this than an 18 year old. Moreover, this sets the ground for a lifetime - it's one's personality that is still in formation at 14. Tripping is a bad idea for now.

I agree with Mushrea and Mark. I started doing mushrooms when I was 16 (I am now 18). At the time I was very confused and desperately searching for identity. At different times I was a wanna-be serial killer, homosexual/bisexual, messiah. It certainly didn't help that I was getting twisted on mushrooms all the time and sending myself deeper and deeper into my own delusions. I have been drastically transformed by my intrepid travels and thank God that I didn't end up in the psyche ward, kill myself, or anyone else before I matured to a level where I had a strong sense of identity without a strong ego. It is a long hard road that I still travel as I am still very young.

My brother started tripping on LSD when he was 14 and developed PTSD after a bad trip. The difficulty integrating the experiance caused him a lot of problems and really fucked his head up. He is better now, and he's learned to only do shrooms and not abuse them.

The psychedelic experiance is a very powerful one that can very dangerous, especially to a young boy who hasn't even adjusted to the fact that his entire body will be covered in hair! Magic is not to be toyed with.

you seem to know what you are saying and i agree fully with your standpoint

but just so you all know, i took mushrooms a few times in my early teens and first experienced ego loss at 14. i guess if i could go back and not have even tried them till older i would not have wanted to explore further, but even then, i feel i gave the proper respect and after experiencing what i did i had a fuller prospective on things
of course i can't say i wouldn't have turned out better if i hadn't tripped then, so i would have recommend young kids not to

also, i think it is very important that if a 14 is tripping that he know why he is doing it and what he wants out of out and hopefully that he has valid answers
