Yushchenko 'given Agent Orange ingredient'

Yushchenko 'given Agent Orange ingredient'

Agencies
Friday December 17, 2004

A scientist analysing the compound used to poison Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko have determined that he was given TCDD, an ingredient of Agent Orange.

At the weekend, doctors at an Austrian clinic treating Mr Yushchenko confirmed that the dramatic transformation in his appearance - from healthy-faced to bloated and pockmarked - was due to dioxin poisoning.

Though doctors say they do not know who had poisoned Mr Yushchenko in September, they said the substance had probably been added to his food, and that just a bit more would have killed him.

TCDD is the acronym for tetrachlorodibenzoparadioxin - the most harmful known dioxin. As a component of the herbicide Agent Orange, which the US military used to clear jungle during the Vietnam war, it caused a wide variety of health problems for US veterans and Vietnamese villagers.

Tests on Mr Yushchenko's blood were conducted by Abraham Brouwer, professor of environmental toxicology at the Free University in Amsterdam. He confirmed that the politician's blood contained 100,000 units of dioxin, the second highest concentration ever recorded.

"It is a single chemical, not a mix," Mr Brouwer said. "This tells us ... there is no way it occurred naturally because it is so pure."

Mr Yushchenko, whose party managed to overturn the contested results of last month's presidential election in Ukraine, will stand again for president in a re-run of his contest with the country's Kremlin-backed prime minister, Viktor Yanukovich, on December 26.

hm... an opponent of a Kremlin backed candidate is mysteriously poisoned... Unfortunately this is very unsurprising.
I've been following this story for some time now and have been terribly impressed by the popular resistance displayed by so many thousands of Ukrainians.
One thing though... I've heard that Yushcenko is the more "western leaning" candidate, though I've not been able to find any of his policy stances... Does anyone here know of a site that has that information?

For the people with short attention spans and/or short memories, or just didn't see it the first time.

 Great_Satan - what does Canada making Agent Orange have to do with Yushchenko being poisioned?

OnlyScarsRemain - I too wonder a bit about his policies. From discussions with a Ukranian friend of mine, he is a big supporter of most of the neo-liberal EU policies. I'll send him an email and see if he knows any english-language sites that explain Yushchenko's positions... I'll post back later if he gives me any links

OK here is his response to me. Sorry about the english, it's not his first language.

Talking about our national identity, it is the issue that stands at the root of the problem. NOTE - I had asked him about the question of national identity, because some interview i listened to on NPR was talking about this We don't have a common identity and, therefore, when we fight for it, pro-Russian East would claim for the autonomy aftet establishing pro- Western West. i think that the current events, the "orange revolution", certainly reveals this problem. This two identities are merely resembled in the candidates...

Yushchenko seems to be a very charismatic character in the eyes of those Ukrainians who still hope to ascertain a democratic state that on the Western basis.

After managing to reduce the impact of the Russian debt default in 1998, Yushchenko was appointed Ukrainian prime minister by President Kuchma(our current president). Later he was accused in stealing a certian sum of money from the budget (kind of money gerrymander)there is a good article about it, i will try to e mail it to u later if i find it). It became a very controversial issue and was soon forgotten. However, he was the only prime mininster who did some positive changes like rising salaries and so on, therefore, rising his reputation amongst ukrainian people as an intellegent and progressive politician.

I wouldn't say that he is the Messiah that will lead Ukraine to western
democracy but he is the one who succeeds due to his reputaion. However, what is mistaken that supporting free, fair and democratic elections doesn't necessary mean that we support Yushchenko and his ideas and his views about it, what commonly seems to be the same.

in this case i wouldn't blame one side or another, i am sure there were
manipulations from both sides and it is obvious...

Anyway, it is admiring how people can fight for their country, i think it is a good example for the world's democracy campaign... At least we resist establishing the oligarch power what would eventualy happen otherwise(bad example - Belorussia, good - Georgia).

There is a lot to say... i think u have to make your own conclusion out of it but don't relly to much on the media, they are giving certainly one-sided perspective... but please ask if there is something that seems to be unclear if i didn't fully answered what u are asking... i will be very glad to help you anytime.

Here is a fair ukrainian web pages i used to read(not owned by the authorities of course):

http://www2.pravda.com.ua/en/ - too much of the analytical stuff, but says a lot...

http://www.5tv.com.ua/eng/newsline/ - it is the channel of fair news...

The rest of the email (and some stuff before what I quoted) were just personal things, that I figured the rest of the shroomery didn't need to see

Anyway, I hope this helps a bit. Let me know if you have any specific questions and I can email him.

yushchenko has survived two assassination attempts from Putin's ex-KGB mafia boys. Putin wants to keep control of the Ukraine. i have heard that yushchenko is pro-western, is for more privatizing and wants to join the European union.

Why would they have used some rare hard to find pure chemical rather than a simple natural one is beyond me.

More effective poisons can be bought on eBay.

Why did Putin use toxic fentanyl derivative to free hostages from 'Nord-Ost' theatre?
