Just want to check with you guys who have tried using popcorn as their grow method. How long did it take for it to germinate and start showing mycelium growth? Thanks.

The cat's multi-spore popcorn experiments took about the same time to germinate as other substrates he's used; 3 - 5 days at 85F.

Well mine's been sitting in a dark closet for 7 days, still no signs of germination. I'm thinking I went wrong somewhere. Maybe the corn kernels were not soft enough or something.

Tried popcorn once, never again Untreated millet based WBS is GREAT spawn. It's cheap, available everywhere & forgiving.

I remember last year everyone was raving about how popcorn was like the new miracle substrate, haha. Rye is the way to go tho.

Yeahh I was thinking of trying WBS. You're supposed to get it at bird stores? That means I'm gonna have to travel a little I guess...I don't even know where the fuck the nearest one is...

pet store. it's just millet based wild bird seed, like you put in bird feeders.
good luck finding it hydro.

You can get birdseed at Wal Mart, Lowes, Home Depot and all kinds of places. My popcorn took a long time to germinate, but took off quite well once it did. I still won't use it again as compared to rye. Rye took off faster and finished overall quicker. WBS is great for spawn, doesn't fruit so well though, and colonizes very quickly.

Rye is a pain to get here in Japan too. I've tried supermarkets...I don't know where else to look. I know Russians use it to bake bread or something...that's about all I know about Rye.
