Sterilization Before inoculation
    #3512654 - 12/17/04 10:03 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Hi. Brand new to the place. Looking forward to getting started. After reading the FAQs and guides and a lot of posts, I still have a question about sterilization:

Is it necessary to sterilize everything in your kitchen while you're preparing the PF tek for the pressure cooker? Or can you get away with not sterilizing at all until you're ready to inoculate, because everything will be killed in the pressure cooker?

Everything I've read seems to say sterilize at every step; I'm just curious as to why you'd need to do that before your substrate is ready for inoculation.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard .
Well yes , if using kitchen as lab you should clean the hell out of it first .
As far as jars of sub , grain , etc it needs to be sterilized before inocing , and needs to be left to cool down to room temp before inocing , to hot 104*F WILL KILL SPORES .

Lots of spores, nasties etc in grain , subs get killed (sterilized) in the PC you want a noncompetitive enviro for the mush spores to find a home in
That is why so important to sterilize as you go .
Hope this makes sense and helps .

Everything that is pressure cooked doesn't need to be sterile before the pressure cooking, obviously.

Great, thanks. Right. Sorry for the vagueness. I just figured it wasn't worth sterilizing the kitchen twice, basically. Because I'd be sterilizing the jars one day, letting them cool overnight, then innoculating the next. It's the next day when I'd sterilize the place.

Thanks for the quick replies and the welcome! Quite excited to get to it.
