Mini Greenhouse
    #3508803 - 12/16/04 03:20 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I built this small table top greenhouse to grow seedlings in. Quite a few people have asked me about it so I finally got around to taking pics of it.

It also turns out to be a great place to start cuttings, propagate P.V. leaves and to keep fresh grafted cactus in.

Approx. dimensions are 4 feet x 3 feet x 2 feet tall. It was framed using 2"x2" lumber. I have 2 shop lights in it with 4x40 watt 6500K tubes. I think each tube puts off 2350 lumens. Not a ton of light... but enough to grow stuff in. I keep the lights on 24/7. I also have a digital thermometer that keeps track of the temperature in there. It stays between 75F and 85F. This makes it ideal for growing cactus and for starting seeds year round.

The real nice thing is that total cost is about $50.00 US. I'm already thinking about building another one.

The outside is covered with a 2 sided tarp with the inside a silver color. Here is a pic of the outside.

With the front open:

Some close ups:

I also set up seedling trays in the mini-greenhouse for long term growth. Here are some 6 month old T. Pachanoi:

Here are some 6 month old T. Peruvianus:

Finally here are the first T. Pachanoi's I ever started. They are 10 months old:

I hope this inspires others out there to start growing.

hey nice pod.
may i ask where you got your seeds for your cacti?? they seem to be of good stock.!

and just in case you didn't know, floro tubes are quite a bit brighter in the middle of the tube than they are on the outside of the tube, so plants put on the very end aren't getting the same light as the plants near the middle, don't forget to rotate you plant configuration so that all the plants get some.  Mylar might help make your pod perform better as well. :sun:

My seed stock was from Mesa Garden for the T. Pachanoi and misc. cactus varieties.  I got the T. Peruvianus from BB.

It's a flat that I use for propogation. It's mostly P.V. Leaves that are growing and a bunch of Pereskiopsis cuttings that are rooting. I need to find some time to transplant most of them.

Nice rig! And nice plants! Thanks for sharing.

So this is more of a propigation tent? Whats your main garden setup? You should consider putting white or mylar on thoses walls.

Actually it has worked out well for the following functions:

1 - Keeping seedlings growing thru the winter months
2 - Starting new seeds
3 - Holding new grafts till they set (no need for plastic bags)
4 - Keeping older grafts growing
5 - Propagation of cuttings
6 - Growing Psychotria Viridis from leaves

Since I don't have a greenhouse, I have a room with a 1000 watt MH that is on a timer.  I keep some cactus under the light and non-cactus out in the fringes.  Have to be careful with plant placement due to light intensity..... have lost a few non-cactus plants to the MH light.

Next year I'm putting up a small greenhouse (10'x10') in my garage for the winter months.  Lighting will be the 1000 watt MH with a small heater/fan combo to keep the temp at least 75 all winter.

So you just throw your grafts right in there, Thats cool. Do you need to raise the lights when putting in fresh grafts?

To be honest, I now just cut off the tip of a Pereskiopsis, graft on a seedling, and just put it in the mini-greenhouse. Success rate is at least 90%. Oh... don't forget the sterilization of the razor blades. I actually got lower rates by doing the plastic baggie method after I grafted.

As I pointed out.... this small set up gives you the ability to do various growing techniques in a small space cheaply.
