COLD weather cubes are awesome (edited WITH PICS)
    #3505047 - 12/15/04 05:25 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

We got a freeze last night- dropped to about 27. I hit the fields this evening and found mounds of cubes. The cold weather does two things- one, it stunts the growth of already forming cubes. Assuming they are under trees, brush, etc, they can survive the frost, but the stop growing. The sun was out hard to day and did a nice job of keeping them from rotting. This is a perfect environment for what I have found to be some of the most potent shrooms you can find, and I found a big bag full (PICS to be posted later tonight).

Second, the next few days will have a slight warming trend with more rain. The nice cold shock is PERFECT for spawning a whole new flush of shrooms. WOOOOOO HOOOOOO!

Here's a bunch of pics. Sorry if it's too many, but I just loaded most that I had. First a pile, then some from the field, then some more from the take home:

OH HOW I WISH I COULD EAT THESE IN PARTICULAR RIGHT NOW:

Guess they are going to have to be dried.

Awesome, I have a nice field right by me where cubes seem to grow fine.

a few of them look like they got frostbitten, but I agree that the colder weather brings more potent shrooms. I've never gone hunting after a freeze, I always assumed that it kills the mycelium. Good finds, where are you?

Lake Charles, LA. Yeah, a few got a bit of frost, but nothing that really damaged them bad. I put them in the food dehydrator last night and this morning I have a bunch of nice dry shrooms.

Three days of freeze in the pnw spells the end for the shrooms for the season. In March and Paril of this year we had one day of snow only in the Central city iof Seattle. But three days here will kill all cyans for the sseason and other shrooms as well. Even the lawn blue ringers which ahve been know to occur all year long if we hacve warmer weather. An overnight freeze is nothing but it does not make mushrooms more potent.

Still quite a nice collection you have there.

MJ- Fortunately we don't get freezes that last that long. We may get a freeze and then drop into the high 30s for a few days and then another freeze, but rarely 3 days in a row. I will find cubes all winter in Louisiana. In fact, I find them all year. This goes against what most books say. I happen to live about 15 miles in from the coast, and so maybe I'm just down here close enough to the coast that conditions are always sufficient to produce some mushrooms. The most abundant season is October through March in my area. In the last few years we've had some dry summers, and in those dry times shrooms were hard to find. I'm probably more diligent than most, and I also know certain shady/damp places to look, and so even during the dry months I am able to find shrooms. blah blah I know I'm rambling now, but...

Anyhow, I respectfully disagree about the potency issue. For whatever reason, cold weather shrooms in my area are more potent than those that I pick in the warmer weather. I believe that it is the stunted growth of the fungus causes more concentration of the psilocybin in a smaller package. Gram for gram you are going to get more bang in the shrooms I picked after our freeze the other night than in the ones I picked before. At least this has been my personal experience over the last 20-something years of shrooming.

Great pics of your hunt supernova :sun:
When I was living in Florida, I noticed a
difference in mushroom potency between
summer and winter fruitings. It could be
that due to the fact that psilocybin is
water soluable, and the summer having more
sustained rains, the cubes found during that
time will be more likely to suffer water
damage.

On a similar note just recently got back from checking indoor horse areas in my SC barns looking for cube pins and subbs hiding out- found some coprinus but how different it is in the stables!  I wish you all the greates of luck this winter finding obscure mushrooms.  Nice finds supernova- I was down around lake charles recently- lots of cow shit to speak of near and far from town.  What a nice place to be (if you're shroom picking).
Otherwise it's boring.  Peace- and similarly I find BTW the difference in potency you speak of to be evident in eating a few cold-weather cubes- stunted/underdeveloped esp.  Don't know what to call it or why but there seems a rather undeniable qualitive difference.
