Looking at laptops

so I'm trying to swindle a laptop out of one of my parents for christmas..or at least the down payment on one.. as I'm sick of having to use the public library all the time. I'm probably just going to do a monthly payment thing since I just recently got a job.. but I'm wondering if someone can help me decide what to get. Basically I'm going to be using it for everything.. graphic design, music, games, internet, writing, etc, etc... it's going to be on the road a lot. I want it to be fast and have lots of memory, and easily upgradeable. (I don't know much about laptops and how easy they are to upgrade....) I want to try one with an Athlon processor and at least 80gb of memory, and 512 mb of ram. This is the one I have my eye on.. but it's pretty expensive - http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/HP-Pavili...roductDetail.do does anyone have any suggestions for a good quality laptop (maybe a cheaper one) that will suite my needs for at least two years?

My Acer suits me well. I noticed you mentioned music and graphic design. Ive heard Macs are good for that, check out some powerbooks. only down side to macs are very very very limited gaming.

Alienware, indeed.

alienware... did I mention I don't want to spend like 5 million dollars? well those are nice and all but too much for what they are.. pentium 4, 40gb, 256 mb Ram for $2,300?? So yeah.. I'm trying to stay somewhere around $1,500.. and that one I posted from circuit city looks like the best deal for the money. AMD Athlon 64.. 100GB hard drive, 512 mb ram... and it's cheaper than the alienware oh and I just plain suck with macs. I can never get used to them.. I'm too dependent on the PC

Whoa, Shroomism ? Where you at? Muahaha.
-------------------- A plethora of music aspirations control my temptations of future revelations beyond "now". The percussion, and the heart beat of my love and devotion. The rhythm goes beyond, prying into the third eye, releasing the creativity held so far inside. The melodicies, through the out of tune pianos and broken classical guitars...there lies a beauty. A beauty as prevelent as the fire inside. To release these energies is pure ecstacy, to deveop these gifts is sacred. The vocality, so pure as can be, shying away from herself, lies within me. For the underlying serenitity, this is what I live for. I plea for harmony, and nothing more. Music equals love. Creation of love leads to the procreativity of the World, and it's spirals and puddles prevailing.

i'd recommend staying away from Athlon 64, unless you use linux and are a big time techie... the technology just isn't used by the vast majority of applications, and you'll pay extra for no real benefit. maybe some years down the road, but for now, nothing really uses the 64's capabilities.
I recently bought a custom machine from LACLinux.com - p4 2.8 ghz, 2X512 mb RAM, ATI RADEON 9600 (128M DDR), newest Debian linux... all in all (i got almost all the upgrades they offer for this model) it ran me about $1800... although I got my work to pay for the whole thing
but why do you want a laptop? you can get/build a desktop for MUCH cheaper... unless you need the "computing-on-the-go" or are moving a lot, i'd seriously recommend building a desktop.

I'd recommend against buying on credit. If you force yourself to save for it, you're going to stay within your budget and prioritize appropriately. I bought a remanufactured Gateway 2.5 years ago for about $1500, the fact that I still use it now makes me consider it a success. That said, the monitor now draws lines that don't exist, the thing is reaching its end of life.
For me, the premium of a laptop was worth it because I can work on the bus 1-2 hrs a day. But otherwise, I'd also recommend against getting laptop. You'll be paying more for a slower machine. Repairs are $200 minimum no matter what it is, when most desktop parts can be replaced for less than that.
Get a good monitor, be cheap on everything else. That will get you started and you'll have a backup system when things break. Look at remanufactured and refurbished machines on major vendors websites, they often have sweet deals.
