Carnivorous Plants in fruiting chamber - a good idea?

I was reading a post about flys spreading contamination around in some guys fruiting chamber. Do you think if you put a carnivorous plant in your fruiting chamber it would take care of these flys? An (active steel trap) plant like the Venus fly-trap would be a good one to go with. These plants like extremely acidic soil, and humid air - so I would think it would be easy to care for one in your fruiting chamber. Does anyone know if these flys would be attracted to the nectar secreted by carnivorous plants? I don't think flys are a problem if you have a cool mist set up, because they create a lot of positive pressure in the fruiting chamber - I think this would make it kinda hard for them to fly around and survive in there.

Uh why don't you just make sure your chamber is sealed?
Plants with dirt are not a good idea, lots of contams. I have lucky bamboo in some water in my chamber, seems to be helping out some.

It could be of help , but I would make sure it to is growing in as sterile as possible soil , and in its own container sitting next to mush tray , no need for the competion a plant will give for nutes in subs .

My horticulture text book says peat moss can be used as medium / soil for carnivorous plants. It also says that peat moss is sterile, it even mentions adding vermiculite to make the soil less dense. I guess you wouldn't want straight casing soil because the pH might be to low, so leave out the crushed oyster shells or liming agents. I think peat moss and vermiculite are very sterile and don't promote pathogens - so if these plants can grow in peat/verm, they are no different than the casings in your fruiting chamber, no less sterile that is...

in order to have insects to eat, a plant must first attract insects. it might be counterproductive to to put a carnivorous plant in your fruiting chamber. not all plants actively attract insects, but some will go as far as releasing odors that will bring a swarm of insects to the plant.

Yup, I thought about that. If someone already had problems with those lil miskito looking flies though, i think it would be an interesting experiment / possible remedy.

OH and kronnyQ - who is Dime Bag Darrell? Why did he get shot? Why should I be concerned? - some of my friends were talking about him earlier, and I've never even heard of him before that. Is he some great musician or something? Nobody said anything nice about Old Dirty Bastard when he died a couple weeks ago from a heart attack at the ripe old age of 36.

Thanks tripndicular, I've heard of pantera - can't say I like their music, but I've heard of them. So i guess they will make a movie now staring Jenifer Lopez as "Dime Bag Darrel" - should be a good one...

that is true, but i doubt that there are any carnivorous plants that repel insects. a plant would not evolve to repel its own food source. maybe placing insect repelling plants around the grow chamber could help.

I would advise you better seal the chamber.
