pasturized straw
    #3502790 - 12/15/04 10:11 AM (13 years, 4 days ago)

Well here in WNY the snow has finally come and I'm gonna be cooking up some straw. I've heard that pasteurized straw is fairly resistant to contams, but I'm wondering how the cold will affect it. My plan was to put the pillow case stuffed with straw in a Rubbermaid to drain and cool. I'll have to do a bit of driving after the straw is pasteurized. I was thinking of putting the Rubbermaid out in the cold to cool down faster, this wouldn't cause problems would it? What if it gets frozen, still good? Any tips for a first time straw user would be much appreciated. thanks and happy shroomin

just let it drain indoors, put a wiremesh beneath it so the water can drain.

u can let it sit overnight if u wish to and use it next day,
it will have to cool for some hours anyway since its full of water and therefor
saves a lot of heat in its core.

putting it outside, especially when freezing temps, is a bad idea,
since freezing could and will cause the water in the straw to rupture lotsa zells, rendering the straw pretty fucked up i guess.

just do it indoor and ull be fine.

Good point. If the straw were to get frozen and be thawed, its strong cell structures might be lost, giving away the valuable porous nature of straw. A mush of straw.

Thanks, I guess I shouldn't put it in the trunk for the ride, its been pretty cold here. When its colonizing what temp do you keep it and about how much spawn to 3 quarts?

just keep at room temp for colonisation.
layer it, like one layer straw, sprinkle lots of spawn on that, another layer and so on.

u want to use a lot of spawn, have some quarts ready.
