messed with a cake
    #3501715 - 12/15/04 02:47 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

hello this is my first grow. i reached the stage of colonized pf jars, seen from outside they are completely white (see picture, on the left). being my first grow, i wanted to try casing with one of the jars, so i put the cake in a plastic bag and destroyed it. to my surprise, i noticed that the cake inside is not colonized, and i ended up with almost completely brown stuff in my bag (i need white stuff, don't i? see pic on the right). should i leave it inside the bag until it's all white or should i case now? and, for avoiding this in the future, should i wait more time after seeing the jar all white? how can i guess when the core is ready? and, wouldn't it be wiser to inoculate the jar in 5 holes (4 sides + core) instead of just the 4 sides? thanx for your help...

..umm..you could have just cased it all together and then incubated it for 1-3 days like you do with all casings...and it would have colonized...have you read anything on casing? Just curious, b/c then u'd know that the top layer gets colonized, meaning that anything inbetween would as well...well...1 jar isnt really enough for a nice casing, 2-3 would be better....how think do you want ur substrate layer to be?

i have read everything i could on casings (stamets + shroomery teks), but being this my first grow i didn't want to waste all of my jars in a casing that will probably go wrong, so i decided to make a very small casing with just one jar. my jars are metric, but i guess they are about 1/2 pint each. i know that in theory one should destroy cake+case it immediately, but some teks advice to leave the cake destroyed without casing for 24 hours, to full colonize the chunks if they aren't already full colonized, which is my case i guess. anyway, do you think that i wasted a cake or i still have a chance to save it?

Leave it in the bag until its fully colonized or contams..whichever comes first. Most likly it will colonize then you can break it up again and case it.

still i can't understand if i did something wrong or not, i *think* i opened the jar too soon, but would have the core of my cake EVER colonize? and what about my idea of inoculating the core, apart from the sides?

did you case it as it was or waited for the chunks to colonize, as scatmanray adviced?

Incubate for 1-3 days? More like 3 days - patch - another 3 days IM0.

that will be fine in the bag as a matter of fact its prolly close to being colonized right now. jars tend to compress your substrate a bag leaves everything loose so the mycelium ripes right through it. when the outsides colonized wait 3-4 for the inside to finish.
