working on a mushroom grow powered by a car battery
    #3500083 - 12/14/04 10:14 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Something I'm pondering.
For anyone interested.

A work in progress and untested.
the resistor colors are not accurate, don't buy them based on the red stripes if you try this.

The climate for the battery operated grow is controlled.
The battery is to run air pumps and lights.

Is there a way to find a relationship between the PSI of an air pump and the displacement rate of air?

I was looking at 12V air compressors used for filling tires. Those things run at 250 PSI and fill up a car tired pretty fast. I was lookin into the possibility of using one of those for air exchange.

car batteries must be ventilated. Not meant for indoor use.. You will get real funky odors. May be very unsafe.

Car batteries will not hold a long enough charge to power lights and pumps for an extended time. If you accidently leave your inside car light on, your battery will be dead in 1/2 a day. Pumps draw a considerable amount of current, that combined with lights and your talking quick drainage.

You will have to re-charge the battery daily.

If you have day time SUNLIGHT handy, a solar panel would run a small squirrel cage fan that would move plenty of volume. But, if you are not in a sunny place, that wouldnt be very effective.

OK please feel free to check my math as I'm stoned and did it quickly:

Check out this 12V blower:
http://www.excess-solutions.com/SpecSheets/BFB979433.pdf

It is rated at 25 CFM.
1 foot = 12 inches, 1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 ft = 12in * 2.54cm = 30.48cm
1L = 1000 c^3
30.48cm * 30.48cm * 30.48cm = 28,316 c^3
therefore, 1 ft^3 = 28L
25 ft^3/min * 28 L/ft^3 = 700 L/min

I have 1700L of air/headroom in my terrariums. Running this for 5 x 3 minute sessions would give me 5 air exchanges and a total of 15 minutes of run time per day.

You can see that it is 12V rated at 9.6W. That's drawing .8 amps.
15 minutes a day drawing .8 amps is .2 amp hours per day.

I am getting 2 x 6V deep cycle batteries rated at 250 Ah, series wired together, giving me a 12V battery with 250 Ah.

Which would run my pump forever?

Is this right? Seems too simple to be right.

I know the math is off but I'm a little messed up right now to fix it...
But it will run a damn long time.
Crap if I didn't throw out that car battery I could test it

1 cubic foot is 144 cubic inches.
divide 60 by that time to get CFM.

Cube is 3 dimensions, you're missing a factor of 12.

One cubic foot = 28.3 L
Go to google and type in "cubic feet to liters"

Next thing that needs to be conquerored is the timer.

timer
and this

to run the timer.
it will also display the battery condition and what you're drawing from it.
Bonus!
:jester:
And 12 volt pumps for $2...no info on current draw or CFM though.

Watts = Amps x Volts

So if something is 5W running on 120V electric current that is .042 (5W/120V) amps. Is that actually drawing 5W/12V = .42 amps from my battery, or is it still drawing .042 amps? Or is this even how I figure it out?

Seems like those things are a lil pointless to have since the timer would be the only 120V thing.

I'm not sure.
don't use the cold cranking amps for your calculations...you'll be way off.
that's what they do in a few seconds, not what they can do all day
the amp hour rate.not cranking amps
