What do you think? (w/PIC)
    #3499606 - 12/14/04 09:21 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I've never done rye before so I'm not entirely sure what a ready to case jar looks like, how close do you think this jar is? I can still see some of the color of the rye, but I figured if I grew it too thick it might be hard to break it apart or might hurt the myc in some way if I do. It's already hard to shake as its one solid chunk of shroom baby goodness. Thx in advance for your opinion!

EDIT: forgot the f'n pic

hey live, so are you saying that it's suppose to be just indivually colonized grain and that it doesn't all inter-twine and become one solid mass?

no , u see ur meant to be able to shake it to colonise faster ! the reason for it becoming a slid mass is because of the excess amount of water contained in the jar!

Yea of course, but once it's Fully colonized you shouldn't have to shake, b/c you cant, it'd be a solid mass, im asking, do you disagree with what i jus said is all.....

Your jar looks like its not a wide neck. if so your gonna have to shake it loose or put a sterile fork in it to break it up so you can get it out of the jar. plus the only thing about your water content is that your grain puffed up by alot of water being absorbed during sterlization. that caused your grain to go over the shakablity level. a jar of grain IMO should be slightly over half full when done.

I've shaken it a couple of times over the last 10 days and it's done nicely, it's just become solid in the last 2 days, and its not TOTALLY solid, just a lot of big chunks. Thats why the jar looks so full, its actually only about half full of grain, but after shaking it it puffed out a lot. I'm just not sure if I should case now or wait a while.

If you want you could break it up now if your worried about not being able to once fully colonized. Just break it up into your casin container, then without putting your casing over top, stick it back into the incubator until it is fully colonized then case it! i garantee it will work great. Ive done it many times.

Colonized grain should become solid. Some will shake apart (popcorn), some you'll need to break up with a sterile spoon (rye). You should not be able to see the color of the rye and it should be a solid almost unshakable mass. If you only fill your jars slightly more then half way then you could probably shake it apart with enough beating and shaking.

Its not a good idea though..if there are any mold spores present when you do this that little bit of grain can become contaminated.

No. You quite likly have mold spores within your fruiting chamber at points. Mycelium will fight off mold spores germinating quite well..if they hit the uncolonized grain though they have a chance to germinate and then the mycelium has little chance of not being devoured.

I guess I'll just wait until its all white and then case em. I have 7 quart jars, and all look the same. No contams so far. Tyvek is some nice shit.

Thx for replies
