delayed pinning
    #3499280 - 12/14/04 08:32 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

It's been a little over a week now, and still no pins. I birthed a few days after complete colonization, and dunked/rolled. They've been in the fruiting chamber with about 12/12 light, and the temp has been in the 70's. Strain is Blue Meanie.

I've been giving them all the right conditions to fruit, but nothing has shown yet. I'm using a big rubbermaid bin with perlite and a bubbler setup. I figured this would be adequate for humidity(which it seems to be, by my gauge's readings) and air exchange. The lid is not on tight, and there are small holes in the handles, so air can escape.

I'm thinking the only thing that could be keeping the cakes from pinning would be that there is not enough(regular) air exchange. However, with the bubbler pumping in fresh air constantly, and at least 3 fannings a day I am not so sure what the problem is.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions to remedy this problem, please post them here, thanks.

Yeah, I figured as much. Last time I grew(PF strain) I think it took less than a week to pin. How long should I wait before I should start to worry and take action to induce pinning? Also, should the cakes be putting out fuzzy mycelium or look similar to how they looked after birthing? Like I said, mine were dunked and rolled, and there's a little bit of fluffiness, but not as much as the last time. Last time however, I used a different fruiting chamber setup with an ultrasonic.

after bout 14 days is when to worry. yes the fuzzy myc is hypela (sp?) knots, soon you will see pins.

What I'm asking is, do I want the fuzzy mycelium to grow on the cakes? Is it necessary to produce a good pinset?

i answered your question. here it is again. yes the fuzzy myc is hypela (sp?) knots, soon you will see pins. pretty cut and dry to me. i told you what its name was and that pins will come soon. well a pinset wont happen without these "fuzzy" knots because it is signs of soon to be pins. sorry you didnt understand the last time i told you.

You dont need to be fanning if you have holes above the perlite level to drain c02 and a bubbler running 24/7 more then enough air exchange...

It's not fuzziness that trns into knots..mycelium that is to fuzzy can lead to overlay..myc shouldnt really be fuzzy at all, but ropey. Primordia has nothing to do with the hyphae or fuzziness though..your cakes or casings can get overly fuzzy () which can lead to overlay () This is more ropey then fuzzy () and should be what a pinning casing looks like. Its not "fuzzy" but ropey. The terms can be confused easily though.

Edit:
I did just relize were talking about cakes so fuzziness isn't a problem..but it still is not a sign of pins comming..it has to do with the humidity being high (which it should be)..but humidity isnt a pinning trigger..

k so cakes can't get overlay? i don't even know what overlay is but i think it's just a casing thing so i don't really care unless it affects cakes. and fuzziness is no problem? some of my jars that have either just finished colonizing or are almost done colnizing are gettign a little fuzzy in some parts

cakes don't get overlay because they are overlaid by being cakes.

that's why i dunk 'n roll, easier for the cake to pin all over.

too much fuzziness and delayed pinning is caused by:
A)Too much humidity
B)Too high temps
