Harvest
    #3497765 - 12/14/04 04:34 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

So my friends cake had 5 mature mushrooms on it, and some more pins that don't have black heads, after he picks the mature mushrooms should he leave the pins for a few to mature or should they go as well. Also My Friend wants to know if he should dunk and roll again, or just dunk. thanks. and peace.

If there is alot, then I would leave the pins to mature before harvesting. After hrvesting all of them, just dunk. I guess you could roll again, but I would just apply verm on the top instead of rolling. That's if I was still doing cakes......

They may not get to dark yet but could be aborts. They might mature too. I dont pic it unless I know it stopped growing..be it abort or mature.

wow, i just picked my first five, the veils freshly broken on all but one. when I was picking some very small pins came up with the base of em, not much i could do though...well, I'll give the other pins a few days. How long do you wait to pick your mature specimens?

Thanks and peace

well if you have ever gotten to go in a smart shop(amsterdam or whereever) all the mushy caps are connected to stypes with no sign of them breaking off anytime soon....

i hope that makes sense heh, but they gotta have some smarts on whats the best right?

It's called marketing. If people believe its better it will sell better. That doesnt mean they believe it. Even if they do, it doesnt mean they know best. Not everywhere in europe will follow the same trend, fresh shrooms in the UK will generally be open capped.

I went to a Harvest Fest (not harvesting mushrooms..but something else  ) and there was a crew with mushrooms...open and closed caps..the closed caps were 3 times as much, same type of cubie though. Marketing.

Just my opinion on the subject..

Is it true that only fresh fungus is sold in Europe? why is this. I'm sure there crops are so huge it doesn't even matter that much if they pick the close caps. Especially if its true that only freshies can be sold.

Just another quick question, i have some stalled jars and I'm wating for them to finish out, I'm leaving for Christmas I'll be gone for 7 days, its cool to just let em keep incubation, should i turn the temp down when i leave? Thanks a ton. PEACE!!!

There crops are huge and prices are cheaper.its because fresh shrooms are legal in places like the UK. It only becomes a drug when prepared for human consumption such as being dried or made into tea or food. Not everywhere in Europe is this way but a good number of places.

Also dont forget the sooner you pick them, although you lose some weight in them getting bigger, the sooner you get onto the next flush. In large legal crops of mushrooms you would only do a few crops before tossing so speed of mushrooms growing would be a bigger factor then getting the most out of every mushroom. You have to find the happy medium of when to pick.
