HUMIDITY IN THE TERRARIUM
    #3497653 - 12/14/04 04:09 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Okay so I have this really litte styrofoam cooler at home that is like used for fishing or something....I found them in the dumpster.  anyways I have cleaned and prepared them very well and they look like a very nice container....BUT....I have put perlite in the bottom of them...now before I had droplets forming on the lid of my containers...but that was with a rubbermaid.  I dont think the rh inside of the container is very high.  A theory of mine is that the lid might not be sealing properly...because you know it just kinda sits on top of the container with no real locking or snapping mechanism....any one have any ideas?

what kinda setup? other then a styro container with perlite? Do you mist / fan? how offen.

If you have droplets forming on the sides the moisture should be ok.
If not then id mist 1 or 2 times more a day.

Tape one side and create a hinge for the lid. Then take a pin of some sort and put it in the lid. Then take another pin and put it down from the pin on the lid, on the side of the container. Use a rubberband around the 2 pins to keep the lid down tight. Cut a hole in the lid of the container, as big as possible while not disrupting any of the functions of the lid, then tape seran wrap (give it about a 3 sheet layer) over the opening to allow light in there.

Velcro may be another solution if the container is sturdy enough to withstand you yankin on it to get it open.

yeah it's in the top. You are fanning and misting.
Using rubbermaid, you should stick to this concept as stated in pf tek.
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23593/pag/4
The plastic will give you a good seal and you ought to achieve 90-95 easily.
Let us know how it turns out.

Why do you think there is less humidity in this container? The lid doesnt need to seal air tight at all but you can bet that its pretty tight on those styrofoam coolers.

I hope its not lack of water drops forming that makes you think theres less humidity since I'm pretty sure we all went to that science class explaining that condensation is water forming on surfaces COOLER then the air and the inside of a cooler would be less affected by temperature then the inside of a rubbermaid tub.

Good eye scat., not necessarily a problem, eh?
Though if it were a problem, it is hard to hold rh if you can't trap it.

Yes but perilite is enough to raise a non airtight tub to 99%. And coolers, by design, are pretty damn close to airtight.

WELL I MEAN ITS NOT EVEN AIR TIGHT IT JUST SITS ON THE RIM....IT DOES TAKE BUT A STRONG GUST OF WIND TO KNOCK IT OFF...YOU KNOW...IF THERE WAS WIND. BUT YOU THINK THAT IT IS STILL HIGH IN RH EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NO CONDENSATION?
