Messy Cake Shrooms
    #3496802 - 12/14/04 11:24 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Hey

Finally after so many tries and so many weeks, more monts actually, I finally harvested a cake of shrooms.

Me Happy!

One question, I found it  a PITA to clean the fine verm of the shroomies feet after I picked them
How do you guys do this?

ANother Q about drying, I dont have any fan so I must dry them in open air. What is best? I read, after I search, that people used RICE and CLAYPIECES.
Would geolite work? Or will my friends stick/dry up sticky to the Geolite ?

Thanks!

Also for all the advice people gave me, with and without knowing it. Also Id like to thank myzelf...

Congrats on the successful grow. If I were you I'd make a little drying chamber. It just invovles an airtight container, a wirescreen for the mushies to sit on, and some desiccant. It worked pretty well for me!

I thought Pitas were for sandwiches?

If you have no fan you need a good desiccant like Calcium Chloride.

fan for 24 hours to get most of the moisture out, i always did that before any kind of desiccant. then i got my food dehydrator.

i meant a housefan.

heck, stick them on a brown paper bag on the back of your monitor/tv. it's better than nothing and will zap them to nearly dry in a day...

but don't sundry them.

Dry first, THEN remove verm. It will flake off. A little verm wont harm you either if a few flakes are stuck in.

For desiccant get an airtight container with wire mesh. Fan drying is done open air, desiccant drying is done air tight. For desiccants you can use Epsoms Salt baked in the oven (I dont remember what or how long but I remember its hot and a while or the moisture won't cook out, something like 475 for 2-6 hours?) or kitty litter. You need to get the silica gel kind. Kitty litter would probably be your best bet. A dehydrator would work as well. A fan (one of those heater fans could work too)  would help alot. Remember this desiccant drying NEEDS to be done in an airtight (or at least close to it) container..even a large bowl with saran wrap over it or something could work but open air it will take longer and shrooms could rot. Unless you do use a fan..then open air

Heyz Scatman,

U Might remember me coming here and so and now I have me 1st shrooms.

ANyways thanks, I was thinking since catty litter is used (clay) if Geolite would work as well? Cause thats what I have in the house now.

But I have it in the open air cause I think the nthe moits can escape?

Hmz will buy a fan 2morrow, but they are rather seasonal in the winter the arent sold much I think so shops fill their shelves with other stuf....

Thanks about the verm tip! It was hell of o job to remove from "feet" of the friends. Next time Ill wait till them are dry!

Thanks,
MF

Its not clay that absorbs it, its the silica gel (popular desiccant). You need SPECIFIC kitty litter..not just any will work as well.

Geolite wouldnt work.

With desiccant you do not want it open air..Desiccant dries the air around it and brings the ambiant humidity low. If its open air it will be pulling moisture out of the mushrooms and the room. This is ONLY if you have a desiccant though..otherwise open air will be better. Its just easier in a small container to lower the humidity then in the entire room. The moisture escapes when using the fan method but you dont want the moisture to escape if using a desiccant, you want it to absorb. Dont put them in a container with geolite though..

Fans are seasonal here too but you can usually find the little personal space heaters with fans built in. You can get one of these and place it far from the heat source (dont dry over 100-125 max 150 degrees F) or most of them you can put on just the fan and have no heat comming from it, if you are worried about heat (I use a heated food dehydrator with no problem).

Until tomorrow I would place them on paper towels on either your computer tower or the tv or a VCR or something..open air..it will warm them and dry them slowly until tomorrow so they dont rot in the meantime.

Hey thanks SMR!

Sure now I see why a desiccant should be used airtight. Since you want to dehydrate the mushies and not the whole room!

Hmz will leave them on coffee filters untill tomowwow then....
