shroom color change
    #349020 - 06/25/01 11:04 PM (22 years, 9 months ago)

Hey All,

My gorilla, would like to Know what causes the color change that occurs when shrooms are maturing(you Know they start out really deep red, maroon color and get lighter) is this an enviromental symtom or hereditary ? to explain hes got some south american cakes fruiting in his treehouse all from same spore print but some cakes the shrooms are lighter in color than other other cakes . He does not understand why ?
all conditions are the same for all cakes.
help me out here so i can get this (heavy assed) monkey off my back !
thanks a heap !

> the shrooms are lighter in color than other other cakes
When yor do a multispore inoculation, you get many different strains(of the same spore race)
That?s why there can even be different looking mushrooms from one cake.

Thanks Anno,
That makes the hairy one understand, so if he were to isolate
mycelium on agar and use that to innoculate his substrate that would fix that problem ?

Anno, this brings up a question I have never been able to have an absolute answer. Perhaps you or someone else can answer this since I am at an ignorance here. Will a single spore innoculation, have a more even flush? For example, in a multi-spore innoc, flushes are out of sync. The first pins to appear will mature first. Later pins, still comming up after 24-48 hours often will reach maturity (some will abhort) as well if allowed to stay on long enough. But this prolongs the fruiting cycle by dragging it out rather than cleaning the casing within 24 hours of the first mature fruits. With multi-spore innoc cleaned off all at once, the harvest is always a mixture of fully mature mushrooms to healthy pins and of course whatever abhorts. This fella is just starting to isolate strains on agar but has not tested them in action. You think he might have more evenly maturing flushes if he tries using an isolated strain?

I have always figured that it is because there is a limited amount of pigment in each mushroom. As the mushroom grows larger and larger, that pigment gets spread thinner and thinner, hence appears lighter and lighter. There is relatively little expansion in the very center of the cap, which is always the darkest area. The very edge of the cap is always the lightest, and that is of course the part of the cap that expands the most.

It's sort of like blowing up a balloon. The more you inflate a balloon, the paler the color you end up with.

This is what I was thinking.

Tired of pimping yourself on the corner to afford spores? Well throw out that red dress and go to the FSR, for spores even you can afford.

Hey, is there a way of changing a bit the color of shrooms depending on the substrate/casing use? Like the nutriments would bee different and change a bit the color? That would be really cool!!! Anybody?

I am completly mad so dont listen to a word I say its the littleblueguyz fault. If I don'tpost anything for a few days, it's that I have suicided myself or I had decided to live on Mars.
