 perlite -vs- vemiculite

I found a gargantumungous size bag of vermiculite at home depot, but that was the only size I could find. I found perlite in realistic sized bags too. I didn't want to buy the rediculous bag of vermiculite so I was wondering what the difference was.
Can I use perlite in the jars instead of vermiculite. If no, why? Has anyone tried this?

The porousness of the perlite makes it a bad candidate to use...think of it as a wet golf ball as compared to vermiculite as a wet tennis ball. That is the best analogy I can think of for it. Vermiculite will release water as needed, while perlite will probably only result in water damage..

Well, my guess would be no. I have never seen perlite used inside a jar or with a substrate ever (that does not mean that they do not exist however). Maybe if there was some way you could grind the perlite, but it still might not work.
Another guess of mine is that perlite may hold too much water, and be harder to sterilize, because it is extremely pourus.

buy the big ass bag of vermaculite. you have no idea how fast you will go through that shit. it's most of the cakes and more than half to all of the casing.

I'm a complete fucking newbie so I don't have much of a clue what I'm talking about, warning said.
I heard that you can use other stuff instead of vermiculite, like bread crumbs and birdseed and rice puffs. This is probably horseshit, I don't really know the guy who told me.

guess I'll just go for the big bag dudes. Thanks for the input. All them fuckers at the stores said it was the same stuff as perlite. I'm glad I asked here.
Guess I'll need to rent a U-haul truck to get it home :P

Nah, its totally different. But buying that big bag will save you a lot of money and you will use it all eventually..
