sorry, another drying post
    #3495464 - 12/14/04 03:05 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

i read the drying section and browsed through all the posts on hooking up a fan and using dessicants and what not...

i dont have a fan, and i can't make a desiccant chamber. i need to utilize as little space as possible... can i just place the shrooms on a paper towel or cardboard and pour some desiccant over the top? what is the reason behind not placing the desiccant directly on the shrooms?

appreciate the help guys, im trying to do this the simple way...

p.s. i dont want to use dry heat either

The reason you can't pour desiccant *calcium chloride* onto the mushrooms is because its going to become soggy, coat ur mushrooms in a glaze, then dry. desiccant isn't meant for human consumption =P thats reason one...secondly, the main purpose of building a desiccant 'chamber' is to isolate a small area of air to the desiccant, so when the mushrooms let off moisture, the desiccant sucks the moisture out of the air quickly and effectively. If you leave it open in a room hundreds of times bigger then a small container, you wont get the effects you want.

If you dont want to use a chamber, or a fan, ur next best option is to to spread the mushrooms apart on a desk, or any flat surface, at least 1/4 inch apart from each other. the farther apart they are spaced the quicker they will dry. Don't place them on somethin that can absorb moisture like cardboard or paper towel, this will cause that item/s to absorb moisture and will keep the moisture right up against your mushroom, possibly rotting part of it.

Leaving them raised on a wire mesh or some sort of fine mesh will help them dry a bit faster since air can flow below them as well, but it isn't absolutely neccisary. I hope this helps, pm me if u have any more direct/follow up questions =) ~D

This dandy wire basket came from a dollar store. It sits on top of my monitor where there is a warm updraft. Crispy mushrooms in about a day. Also good for draining grains, bird seed, or pasta.

Haha...yea...I don't know what reason you couldn't make a little desiccant chamber.  All you need is a couple of wiremesh surfaces and a bowl.

That's a good idea about using your computer.  I have ~6-7 fans in my computer, and on the top of the case I have a little vent with a fan...I think I've found my spot for drying out mushies

How funny, I just bought the materials for my next chamber from our dollar tree store. A flat circular mesh thing with a handle(broken off) a cheap metal turkey roaster, and some syran wrap...add desiccant and you can dry out 75-100 wet grams in a nite as long as u air/fan dry them a bit before. All for under 5 bucks and its about 12x18 inches wide.
