Forced Hibernation?
    #3491588 - 12/13/04 02:05 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

can i force a casing to hibernate for a month or two? first flush is about to end but i'm moving out for a month or two and i want to know if i can wrap them up in tinfoil after harvesting and chuck em in a fridge or something for a month or two and then re-fruit when i get established again. anyone?

(Food for thought... A cows anus is 98.6F, so is all of her 7 stomachs. Mycelium doesn't grow overnight, it starts growth within the cows digestive track, once exposed to the atmosphere and cooling night temps, after baking/incubating in direct sunlight after a day or two, you see the fruits come out. You also have a constant 88F temp in the patty as it continued to be digested/decompose.)

(More food for thought. Most mushrooms are spring/fall lovers. Avg night temps are 55F-65F depending on location. Mushrooms will trigger at temp drops, and will retard at low temps, not growing as fast, waiting for the next warm day to explode. You can freeze mycelum and spores as storage down to -150F safely, (Liquid nitrogen bath))

(All spores can survive 110F if properly dried, moisture inside will instantly boil, killing the spore.)

However, not all temps are ideal, most will work without effort. You will only be playing with quality and quantity, not success and failure.

Recap, from what I gathered from the net...

35F(2C) or lower... (Deep freezer, water organisms don't like it)
40F(4C) (Ok agar storage)
45F(7C) (Ok needle storage, Best agar storage)
50F(10C) (Best needle, agar storage)
55F(13C) (Best needle, cake, Ok agar storage)
60F(16C) (OK needle, cake storage)
65F(18C) (Best cold shock temp)
70F(21C) (Ok cold shocktemp)
75F(24C) (Ok cold shock temp, Ok incubation growth)
80F(27C) (Ok incubation growth)
85F(29C) (Best incubation temp)
90F(32C) (Mild substrate fermentation, Ok incubation growth)
95F(35C) (Accelerated substrate fermentation, Bad incubation temp)
100F(38C)+ (You are now making cooked mycelium/substrate wine)

210F(99C) (Water is now boiling)
215F(102C) (Pre sterilization temp = 7Psi pressure cooker)
220F(104C) (Sterilization temp = 15Psi pressure cooker)
225F(107C) (Your pressure cooker is ready to explode... it is clogged 30Psi)

I say yes... (Fridge reterdation) I would still throw into a soft insulated lunchbag to limit how fast it drops in temp. Or throw in a cardboard box before you put into the fridge.

Yes, fridge... (Freezer would most likely kill your hard work.)

i had some 1/4 pint popcorn jars that were kept in the fridge after colonization. They stayed there for almost 4 months. managed to get room to case them finaly (small tnt) and started incubating their casings on 13 dec. they are almost ready to fruit now! i would say that refrigeration would be fine, but not freezing.

These temps aren't correct.

228F-5PSI
240F-10PSI
250F-15PSI
259F-20PSI

I dont know maybe the celcius is correct and you converted wrong..either that or the temps you got were wrong. Either way not applicable to this post just thought I'd mention it...I dont know that a fridge will hybernate your casings for a month but its your best chance. Cover well and make sure your fridge doesnt freeze things (parts of mine does if left for a long time against the back).
