so I have a straw bulk grow who's casing layer is experiencing some overlay. Its been about 9 days since I've initiated pinning and so far nothing. Any ideas?

first off, are you sure on the overlay? is the top myc discolored? yellowish? does it have water standing on it (from mistings) that won't go away... that would indicate overlay to me.

it can take up to two weeks for pinning to start.

what's your setup like? light schedule, humidity, air exchange, mistings?

increase light levels. continue fanning frequently. be patient. maintain humidity. overlay is not a huge problem with cubensis. it will fruit.

I would be willing to bet you don't have overlay.

Evenly and heavily colonized, but not overlaid:

Overlay:

On its way to overlay:

Note even white colonization RIGHT before pinning..the first two pics are like a day or two apart. In the last two pics on the way to overlay you notice the overly fuzzy white growth all over the casing from to much ultrasonic..this flattens out with misting and creates the overlaid casings like you see in the middle pics. This is a problem and scraping should only be thought about at this point..which I still wouldn't do and wait until the first flush is over THEN possibly scrape a little. Scraping is very extreme. These are the overlaid casings on the first flush..I didn't touch them..just let them go..I wanted to get some good pics to show how big (or small) of a problem overlay is..

And in this picture, the two tins to the left were the casings "on the way to overlay" pictured above..I don't remember which flush but I think the second:

If you are getting overlay, learn. Initiate pinning earlier, perhaps do better jobs with patching if you patched at all, and if not, patch. A little casing mix on some dense areas of not overlay but on its way can help..gives it something to grow into. Its not mycelium that's a problem its a thick mat of mycelium, especially when hardened that is a problem.

The two tubs bulk method is a neglect method and therefore isn't optimal..it wont give optimal air exchange and you need to fan it for quicker pinning. Lots of air exchange along with light and a 10 degree temperature drop is important. If you lost that 10 degree temp drop for whatever reason (incubating at lower temps or fruiting at higher temps) air exchange becomes even more important. Other then that just keep up the light 12-18 hours a day and wait.. Those overlaid casings above took 14-16 days to pin from initiation (with a 3 day incubation time prior).

scatman, this should be in the faq... i think we'd get less confusion that way.

Perhaps I'll ask Anno to add it to the archives..this is a popular subject for concern among the first few grows..
